Maybe everybody should be able to have their own unique custom license plate. I want a picture of Kenny from southpark on mine, perhaps an Anarchy logo, or a picture of an amoeba because it's my favorite animal.

Sounds good to me if you are willing to pay for it.

I think all you need is ten thousand signatures and you can have it. (Although you might run into some copyright issues.)

If he wants to "express himself" he can paint up his car like the Duke boys, slap on bumper stickers, etc.

No need to waste my tax dollars on an offensive license plate.

But if he has the signatures and has followed the process then why can't he have his vanity plate? Why is his group any different than the dozens of other groups who have plates? Or Lucifer's anarchy group?

To me the confederate flag is about as offensive as the swastika. Well actually the swastika had centuries of benign usage and even used to be the insignia of the US Army 45th infantry until the 1930s. There has never been anything acceptable throughout all of history about the confederate flag in my opinion.

He followed the process and was told he did not meet the criteria. All of the current license plates are non-offensive.

I would hope for the same result if someone petitioned to fly the confederate flag over a government building.

Frankly I feel we have too many license plates already. He can express himself differently.

They generate a lot of extra revenue for the state, which helps balance the state budget!

Edit - I looked it up: 35 million in revenue for the 2009-2010 fiscal year!

I thought they were supposed to raise money for whatever cause was on the license plate?

Still think there are too many though.

He should just get right to the point and have a bumper sticker made that reads "BRING BACK SLAVERY"

Liberals should sport bumper stickers that say:

"I am intolerant of anyone who does not see things the way I do."

Really, how much is that per person in the state of florida? Less than $10.00 I'm sure. I'd gladly pay $10.00 to see all those idiotic plates vanish.

A confederate flag does not say bring back slavery. It's use today commemorates our ancestors who fought in a conflict over 150 years ago. I had a couple myself who fought under that flag. I would not buy the tag personally because I do not want to give the government anymore money than I have to but I respect those who wish to.
By the way, my Florida ancestors did not own slaves, they were far too poor to afford such.

Ah yes, it commemorates the good ole days conservatives and teabaggers are constantly pining for.

another confederate flag thread.. haha. I guess it never dies.

it would be nice to keep tags away from things political or controversial. I understand the confederate flag is part of history and not necessarily symbolic of anything other than Southern history - but it is controversial. If this dude gets his way, then who and what will be next? Why can't he put up a big old confederate flag bumper sticker?

They may not have owned them, but I'll bet they gazed at them enviously through the store window.

To some the Confederate flag commemorates their ancestors who fought in a conflict 150 years ago.

To many the Confederate flag is a symbol of hatred, racism, and violence.

There are far better ways to publicly display pride in one's ancestors or history - if that is your true goal.

The wonderful & powerful thing about our Constitutionally-protected freedom of speech is that even offensive speech is protected.
I think the Confederate battle flag symbolizes an unfortunate war, the underlying cause of which was the "right" of some to own slaves. Although I had ancestors who fought on the Confederate side, I think they were wrong-headed. To me, the Confederate flag is offensive speech. I wish people didn't want to flaunt it, but I think it is & should be protected by the 1st Amendment.
