Pat Carlyle will speak at the May 3 meeting of the Emerald Coast Meditation Society. Her topic will be “Willingness To Be With Things As They Are.”
The ECMS will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Christ the King, at 480 N. Co. Hwy. 393, one-half mile north of Hwy. 98. The meeting is free and open to the public and will include 20-30 minutes of meditation.
The focus of this session is on our resistance against what we see as unpleasant. We learn that our experience of something—be it pleasant, unpleasant or neutral—is simply another layer in the richness of the moment. This layer, traditionally called a feeling tone, is always present. Think of it as a lens through which we experience life. Our ability to observe this layer, without getting swept away by it, helps support equanimity.

The willingness to be with things as they are for this moment can radically change the way we relate to the stress and pain of our life. We will explore techniques that help us uncover our experience of pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral experiences and provide support for our formal practice.

Pat Carlyle is a Mindfulness Meditation teacher in Santa Rosa Beach. She began her meditation practice over 40 years ago and is dedicated to offering the teachings of spiritual practices that awaken our natural wisdom and compassion. She holds her M.Ed in Psychoeducational Processes and Organizational Development. Pat taught executive education and strategic planning in Fortune 500 companies prior to her move to the beach in 2002. She now has a successful real estate practice and is an avid outdoorswoman.
The ECMS is an ecumenical group open free to anyone. It meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month, September through June. The evening will end around 8 p.m. Anyone who would like meditation instruction should come at 6:15 p.m. Questions? Contact Tracey Tapp, tltapp@cox.net.
