Baytowne Marina in Sandestin Bursts with Action
May 29, 2018 by Kerri Parker
Drive right through the north gate of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort for tons of fun, delicious eats, and cold drinks at Baytowne Marina on the picturesque Choctawhatchee Bay.
The 115-slip marina bustles with activity every day. It is one of Northwest Florida's most unique destinations with variety for the whole family. The marina offers access to our 30-mile bay, connecting in the east to the Intracoastal Waterway and on to Panama City, and in the west to Destin, Pensacola and beyond. In either direction you can access the Gulf of Mexico.
Baytowne Marina is upscale yet relaxed, with the feel of an island beach resort. At the Marina's center is a white, sandy beach flanked by docks with hundreds of boats ranging in size from speedy skiffs to stately yachts. Getting in on the action is easy. The hard part is is choosing your brand of fun - watercraft rentals include stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, jet skis, fishing boats, sailboats and pontoon boats.
SoWal Insider Tips: pontoon rentals are in high demand so reserve in advance - call (850) 267-7777. Choctawhatchee is pronounced chock-tuh-hatch-ee.
With several fishing charters offered at Baytowne Marina, you can tucker yourself out boating the big ones in the bay or Gulf of Mexico, and then head back to the dock for delicious waterfront dining, including a full bar at the Marina Bar & Grill. They'll even cook up your fresh catch and serve it up with locally grown goodies – farm to table style!
On our recent visit we sat right on the deck by the dock under the umbrellas, and dove into the seafood dip and fish tacos. So yummy we had to come back for more the very next day! Look close and you'll see each of the bar stools bear the name of a boat docked at the marina. Locals know this relaxed eatery is also a prime rib haven on Friday nights. Be sure to show up early because it’s a sellout almost every week.
If you’re looking for a romantic venture with exquisite service, and fine food paired with cinematic views, look no further than the Solaris. The 125-foot yacht docks at Baytowne Marina and offers sunset cruises, and weddings and live music events hosting up to 150 guests on the open water.
If something a little more intimate is what you fancy, inquire about overnight stays in a private vessel that will surely be a one-of-a kind getaway for you and someone special.
One of the most exciting events in South Walton is hosted at Baytowne Marina, the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic. In its 16thyear, the richest billfish tournament on the Gulf Coast draws record crowds every year with two days of exciting weigh-ins as anglers vie for nearly $2 million in prizes. With nightly entertainment, fireworks and activities, the free event is open to the public. Mark your calendars for June 20-24 and learn more about the event by checking the SoWal.com Events Calendar.
Maybe you just want some bait and a fishing rod? Step up and meet one of the experienced bait shop employees at Baytowne Marina who can guide you through the rules of catch and release, and the basics of bait and tackle. The little shop is full of handy merchandise, but the real treasure is the keen insight you gain when chatting with passionate staff. Be sure to ask about monthly seminars aiming to teach aspiring ‘fisher folks’ how to fish like a local.
Hang around for a spectacular sunset over the water! As the sun sets and the lights of the marina reflect on the majestic bay, you can’t help to feel you've been transported to a tropical getaway. Flip-flop your way over to the marina beach for a festive bonfire and luau every Tuesday night from 6 to 9 pm. The luau sets the stage for unforgettable memories and lots of laughter echoing across the water.
