Seasons Change Fishing Strong

November 29, 2016 by Larry Pentel

Well the seasons are finally changing, the surf is up and I am on the hill doing boat chores. We have had a long run of good weather and fairly warm temps. I got to run trips in the Gulf for 8 out of 10 days at the end of November this year.

Most years I get booked every day around Thanksgiving but only get to run half of my trips due to weather. Red Snappers are closed now till sometime next year (probably in May) and we can finally start targeting some other critters!

The Amberines (lesser amberjacks) are showing up along with the Flounders. There are still plenty of Kings around and they will stay as long as there is bait up on the beach. We didn't really have the usual fall run of Mahi up on the beach this year but who knows, with everything running later this year they may show next week!

With the cool fronts starting to come thru our fishing trips will be cut back to the calmer days between fronts and the weather will play a much bigger role in when we want to go. I am ready for a bit of a break and to get caught up on all the maintenance required to keep 4 boats and dozens of rods and reels working.

Here are a few pics from the past 10 days.

These folks fish with me every year for a few days around Thanksgiving. After 2 days of snapper fishing and a limit of Kings I was able to get 'em to chase Flounders. With great success I may add ! My first Flounder trip of the year, they tallied 23 of the flat dinners in the box.

More Regulars on a weekend Red snapper trip. That's a Unicorn file fish in the middle. One of natures oddities and 2nd one I have seen this Fall.

Nashville Singer/writer Hugh Mitchell with his Dad on a great weekend trip. He says his Dad taught him how to play guitar, his mom to sing and I'm workin' on getting him to catch more fish.

That fellow on the left has been fishing with me since he was a kid and has had some great catches over the years. After a several year absence due to being responsible he came back and proved he still had the touch with the biggest fishes of the day.

Sundays trip before the weather blew up Monday. It was these folks first trip and they weren't ready for hard these fish pull ! A great catch for first timers.

As soon as it calms down we are going to see just how thick the Flounders are!
