"Democratic National Committee officials have discussed the prospect of having Michigan and Florida conduct Democratic caucuses in the coming weeks that would nullify those states' January primary results and award delegates to the national convention based on a second election. Both states were stripped of their delegates for violating DNC rules and holding primaries prior to this week's Super Tuesday vote." http://www.macombdaily.com/stories/020708/loc_n4001.shtml
A do-over!
Yes! I have always wanted to caucus.
Honestly, I think that a caucus would be the only fair way to handle the whole seating of delegates situation.

can and independent like me, caucus for a democrat? What about registered Reps? Just curious. If so, I could foresee some problems. I recall hearing that in Iowa, candidates were encouraging people from other states to come to Iowa and caucus.

Looking at the rules for other states, and then factoring in Florida's primary rules, I think you'd have to be registered as a Democrat 30 days prior to the date of the caucus.

Now this is going to be very interesting. Do you think they would let us Republicans just come and watch? I would love to see how this works out. Maybe we all need to change to a caucus system.

Well, since you guys are at fault for the whole mess, I don't see why you should be completely left out. :funn:
I swear, you guys must feel like it's Christmas. I hope you're lighting candles to St. Katherine Harris, Patroness of Vote Suppression, in thanks for this chaotic mess. I mean, even wily Republicans couldn't have forseen a brokered convention, could they?
Imagine what you guys could have done if you had been able to nominate a real conservative.

Alright now. I have been nice and agreed to stay out of this until after a decision is made. We nominated a candidate that should be acceptable to everyone. And once he announces Charlie Crist as his running mate, we should have the Democratic vote sewed up. Gosh what some people will do to win.

If Obama and Clinton had just ignored those other states they could have come down here, listened to the people, and then no one could have argued the vote did not count. But oh no, they let a few smaller States make their decision for them, used Florida as their personal ATM, and then proceeded to tell the millions of hard working citizens of this great State that their votes were irrelevant.
Personally, I am so offended by the way that they ignored all the hard working people of this great State, that before they even attempt a caucus, I would like to see some apologies. From the candidates, Thurman, and Dean. We need a time of healing. Maybe by 2012 we can forgive.
There, is that party line enough for you?

So, if it's in May, as I have been reading, we "independents" would have time to change over and get to vote.

Why, yes. I believe you would have time.
Interestingly, I went to fladems.com to see if there might be a way to switch party affiliation online (I'd seen a register to vote link last night) and noticed the home page now prominently features a week and a half old press release that was not even on the site last night.
AMAZING NIGHT FOR DEMOCRATS EVERYWHERE
Florida Democrats surpassed the total combined vote in the first four "early states", topped the total population of New Hampshire, shattered the previous state record for turnout in a Democratic Presidential Primary, and even broke the previous record for turnout in ANY Democratic primary in Florida.
I'm beginning to think Rep. Wasserman-Schultz may be the blue version of Katharine Harris.

Bravo! Bravo! Encore!!!Fabulous performance!
As for McCain, well...I hope you realize I don't find him too conservative. I meant that you guys must be kicking yourselves for putting up a moderate given the current situation. I'm still being nice.
It is going to be tough. I can not count the number of times I was told yesterday by people that they were just going to stay home rather than vote for McCain. These people are hard core Republican voters. These are voters I was counting on to get elected, and now getting them to the polls is going to be a big problem.

These people are foolish. I do not believe that any intelligent person will stay home on election day just to make a statement. Vote Libertarian, Green or another 3rd party, but to stay home because some radio host rants against McCain is proof to me that we need an 'issues awareness' test to enter the voting booth.

That's a shame. I always voted. I have written in a candidate as well when I wasn't happy with my choice, to to be a part of the process. Have you submitted your first press release, yet? I don't remember? If not, I know that the local paper runs the first one free for most of the candidates, such as the sheriffs race. I can double check for you on Monday.

Guys, we need to let the Florida Democratic Party know that we want a caucus. Please send an email to Chairwoman Karen Thurman at email@fladems.com to let her know you disagree with her decision to oppose a caucus.
Please let me know on this thread of via pm if you do this. Thanks!

I doubt Thurman gives much weight to my opinion. But you need to see if you can get School Board member Mark Davis involved in this. He has a relationship with Thurman since he is one of the few Democrats in the panhandle that keeps getting re-elected.

Yes I am running for school board.
Well first Florida Statute was changed when HB 537 was passed. Coincidentally that is the number of votes that GW won the election by over AG. Did not want anyone to miss that. Now CC can run for VP without resigning from office. While several people question the polls CC enjoys tremendous popularity througout the State of Florida. Over 70% among Democrats. His last minute endorsement is widely credited with putting McCain over the top in Florida which ultimately led to the only other viable candidate suspending his campaign. CC has connections with AS in California, and DT in New York. He is an astute fundraiser, has a poltical machine that I would not dare go up against, and can deliver Florida which I believe is going to be critical in the election. I heard Bob Dole drop the name Governor Crist as a possible VP the other night on Colbert. Things just seem to me to be lining up. But there are some rumblngs about CC that could be a problem on the national level. But America is becoming more tolerant so, if true, that in itself may not be a problem.
I think the VP pick is going to be the most critical decision for the future of a McCain Presidency.

I agree. He is palatable now. If he picks Hickabee, he is distasteful.

So I am not up to date on my caucusing. Iowa allowed non-residents of Iowa to participate in the caucus, or at least that is the way I understand it. So, you don't have to be a full time resident to participate. Why on Earth would one's party affiliation matter, if residency doesn't matter? Secondly, if an independent like me, can "change" parties, I am guessing that the Republicans can too. Is this correct? If so, a caucus is the last thing that an Obama fan would want in Florida right now.
Please explain how a caucus is different than a primary election.

Iowa didn't allow non-residents to caucus.
The caucus date issues earlier this year resulted in Iowa having its earliest caucus ever. The caucus was scheduled for Jan. 3, which was before college breaks were over. With so much support among young people and students, this could have had a huge impact on Obama. The campaign encouraged students originally from out of state -- but registered to vote as residents of Iowa -- to return early to caucus. The Clinton campaign pounced on this, and denounced him for "trying to encourage out of state voters to participate and dilute the influence of the Iowans."

very good statement chrisv. I was going to say that "certain" people need to stay home. if they want more of the same as far as Bush's policies, then I would not be offended if they did stay home.
regarding local elections WaltonGOP, it was my understanding that we vote across party lines all the time - party does not really matter to me locally - okay so everybody and their brother are registered republican - for some reason I cannot fathom, except we are considered Lower Alabama, and perhaps for good reason.
I could care less the party of my sheriff or my school board members. or even county commissioners as long as they are qualified and willing to work. and as long as they aren't coming in with their own political agenda. make sure you get published in the papers, let us know about you on sowal.com, you'll do fine.

Iowa didn't allow non-residents to caucus. Thanks for the explanation. Do I correctly understand that in the Iowa caucus, for one to participate, he or she only need to say that they intend to move to Iowa to become permanent residents?

I'm still not understanding whether or not someone who has already voted in the GOP primary can now change parties, and have a say in the Dem caucus. This Florida thing is going to be one BIG fiasco.

From the Iowa Secretary of State's website--
What does "Residence Address" mean?
Your residence is where your home or living quarters is located, and, to which, whenever you are absent, you intend to return - except if you are away from Iowa because of federal or state government employment, including military service. Leaving for temporary purposes, such as school attendance, does not result in a change of residence for voting purposes, unless you register there.
Why is the residence address so important?
Because your polling place and elected representatives are determined by your residence address. In order for you to receive the correct ballot on election day, your registration must have your residence address.
Can I put down my post office box as my address?
No, the address must be the complete street address of your residence. The only exception is the Domestic Violence shelter. We also cannot accept a mail drop location such as Mailboxes Etc. or PakMail. If you have a post office or mail drop box, put this on your registration in addition to your street address.
Can I choose which address to use for registering?
You must register where you live. If you live at different places at different times of the year, you can register at only one address. If you are a student living at school, you must decide whether to register at your parent's home address or at your school address (but not both!)
More information on voting for college students (Iowa Secretary of State)
Persons who go south for the winter must decide whether to register in Iowa or in the other state.
You cannot register at a business address, a former address or at a piece of property that you own.
How do I become a Iowa resident?
As far as voter registration is concerned, if you live in Iowa and intend for this to be your legal residence, you are a Iowa resident.
There is also a $7500 fine for signing a registration card containing false information.
