I received an email that outlined some of the changes coming up in Seaside and thought it might be of interest to some of you. Part of the email is below:

Thirty-six sand live oak trees are being planted on the perimeter of the amphitheater. This planting is the first phase of a larger beautification and improvement plan for this area, occurring across the next several years. In years to come, these beautiful trees will provide shade and ambiance to the amphitheater for everyone?s enjoyment.

Additionally, look for the Spring opening of three new eateries! On the south side of 30 A Bill & Heavenly Dawson will open the Shrimp Shack featuring steamed seafood, and Dave Rauschkolb will open the Pizza Bar which will feature delicious wood-fired pizza. On the north side, next to the Post Office, James and Jennifer Murphy will be opening the walk-up Barefoot BBQ in two Airstream trailers. Barefoot BBQ will be serving hormone-free, steroid-free beef and pork, ribs and chicken.

There are also plans for improving the area alongside 30A in front of the post office, Frost Bites, Barefoot BBQ, and Raw and Juicy, with improved sidewalk, tree plantings and a shaded area. This will happen by Spring.

We drove around the amphitheater on our way home tonight and saw all the new oaks were already in. There are a lot of them and they are good size already. It seems like they could have put in about 1/2 the number. They are going to be thick and beautiful in coming years. Quite an addition!

I totally agree, was such a pleasant surprise watching them put them in yesterday! I was dreading the circle of palms...

Oak trees!Thank goodness. I can't wait to see them. I am not a big palm tree fan either. If you can believe it some developer put palm trees here in Northern Alabama in a new development. Not sure what he was thinking. Oaks would have looked great!

What was there before? I remember after one of the hurricanes of 2005, the salt water had made all of the leaves brown on the trees around the amphitheatre -- it looked like fall. I'm pretty sure they were hardwoods. But maybe not native?

They were sycamores or maples, can't remember exactly, but the new addition is beautiful.

P.S. The new trees are native.:clap:

It kills me that they will plant Oaks in SS, and palm trees in places like Defuniak and Crestview. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE oaks...I just think the irony is funny.

I hope they are the kind that are native to the area & not the ones that grow tall. They will be the first to go in a high wind storm.

I also noticed saw palmettos in the planters where flowers used to be near Shimmering Seas. The oaks are beautiful & I had to force the kids not to try to climb them yesterday.

I don't like palm trees, except where they naturally grow.... NOT HERE!!!!

They are native and generally Pine trees are the first to go in a wind storm.

Only thing about oak trees - live oaks AND sand oaks, both of which are native here - is that their root system is very shallow. It branches out from the tree in all directions just under the soil surface, instead of down. This is why they are susceptible in storms.

This is also why contractors / landscapers should never use heavy equipment under or around live oaks, but that's another topic entirely.
