I received an email that outlined some of the changes coming up in Seaside and thought it might be of interest to some of you. Part of the email is below:

Thirty-six sand live oak trees are being planted on the perimeter of the amphitheater. This planting is the first phase of a larger beautification and improvement plan for this area, occurring across the next several years. In years to come, these beautiful trees will provide shade and ambiance to the amphitheater for everyone?s enjoyment.

Additionally, look for the Spring opening of three new eateries! On the south side of 30 A Bill & Heavenly Dawson will open the Shrimp Shack featuring steamed seafood, and Dave Rauschkolb will open the Pizza Bar which will feature delicious wood-fired pizza. On the north side, next to the Post Office, James and Jennifer Murphy will be opening the walk-up Barefoot BBQ in two Airstream trailers. Barefoot BBQ will be serving hormone-free, steroid-free beef and pork, ribs and chicken.

There are also plans for improving the area alongside 30A in front of the post office, Frost Bites, Barefoot BBQ, and Raw and Juicy, with improved sidewalk, tree plantings and a shaded area. This will happen by Spring.

Pine tree stability varies by the type of pine. The non-native shortleaf pines that were planted because they grow big fast for paper and turpentine company use are horrible in terms of wind tolerance and go down in light tropical storms.

The native longleaf pines they're replanting in the state forests and Eglin reservation these days are significantly sturdier and actually do pretty well in higher wind conditions.

The right species of palm trees are some of the most wind-tolerant of them all.

Very true, in fact many of the paper pines were specifically bread to have very shallow root systems to make stump removal very easy.

You all are right about the hybred pines (loblolly). I lost over 10,000 of them in a storm on Mother' Day '08. All the pines were planted 17 yeare ago.

Some of the massive oaks that were blown down were over 75 years old. I measured some of the root balls that were over 20 feet in diameter.

The Weather Service estimated the winds at 70 to 90 mph. I counted 6 places where the tornado touched down on my property. In every spot it would clear about 4 acres. It took the loggers 3 &1/2 months to clear 90 acres. Looks like a war zone.

(fire wood anyone?)

Wow, of course a tornado will do what it wants and rearrange your property how it sees fit. Wish I had a need for firewood. I assume it would have to be cut and split?

As you cans see, oaks are being installed in a double row on Scenic 30A, curbs and pavers are going in, then the 2 current airstreams and 2 new ones for Barefoot BBQ will go along the road behind the trees on either side of the post office.
