The Walton County Sheriff's Department responded to a medical emergency call at 3:58 p.m. on 8/15/06 in front of the Sea Cliffs condominiums on Blue Mountain Road. Responders arrived to find a few beachgoers administering CPR to a white, middle-aged female who had been recovered from the Gulf.

Responders cleared the beach and immediately took over emergency treatment, but the victim remained non-responsive. Without being able to revive the victim, emergency officials transported the body to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, which was not able to provide further details. Witnessess were reluctant to share information with the media immediately after the incident.

The area that the woman was found is private, and no lifeguards were present. The South Walton Fire District was flying green flags at the time, and the water was clear. No further information has been made public at this time.

I work on the beach in Seagrove and myself as well as other co-workers all have allergy-like symptoms which began a few days ago. Sinus trouble, scratchy throat, and a general weak feeling. The only member of our crew who isn't sick was off Friday and Saturday. I'll give him a few days to catch up. ;-)

I don't recognize any of the Red Tide tell-tale signs, but something is certainly going around.

Yesterday was the first day I had been in the Gulf for a couple of weeks. After dunking my head underwater, I noticed that my eyes were burning a bit more than normal when wetting with salt water. It is that same feeling, but very mild, of Red Tide. The wind was blowing fairly strong from the south, but I didn't have any of the other symptoms like shortness of breath and burning eyes, after the water dried from my eyes. I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it if it weren't from reading this thread.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has reports on Red Tide.
Apparently they have volunteers take samples I think weekly and mail them in. They are tested for toxins.
They did report red tide in Pensacola, but when I looked last they did not say anything about our area.

Okaloosa & Walton counties never report anything unless there are hundreds of dead fish lying all over the beach. Too scared that the tourist will stay away.

HUGE pet peeve of mine since I have asthma.

From what I understand, the lack of reporting in WalCo is due to lack of people to collect samples.

Regarding Red Tide, today, I drove over to Ft Walton Beach and between the Destin bridge and the Ft Walton bridge, my eyes had a light burn and on the return trip in the same area, the light burn in my eyes lasted a little longer and I also had a slight burn in my nose, just like when Red Tide rolled in last year, but much more mild. The winds were out of the south. (I roll with my windows down.)
