I like to get through Thanksgiving first, but after that, anything goes.
I usually just put up red chili pepper lights, don't know how well that would go over in these parts.
I usually take everything down New Year's Day.

Neighbors of ours on our old Denver block keep their tree up through Valentine's Day, and always have a huge VD party, with their tree decorated with hearts.
One year the tree actually began growing--it had new pale green growth on its branches for their annual party.
In the days long since past, I always put up our family tree and decorated it, but I never took it down. That was my deal. Apparently, no one else in our family had a removal deal, so sometimes, our Christmas tree remained standing in our mostly unused living room, until July or August.

The rule of thumb in our house is that ALL Christmas decorations must be taken down by Good Friday. There's no decorum in having items celebrating a birthday still around on a crucifixion day. Although in your case, SJ, a dead Christmas tree might have served as a sad if not perverse commentary.

I saw some lights on Friday night in a not so great neighborhood in Atlanta and they made me happy! :D

We always had fake trees. I take that back. We always had the same fake tree.

I posted on another thread recently that I saw 3 houses in my neighborhood last week fully decked out, inside (Christmas trees!) and out, with all lights ablaze.

We've gone fake, too. When the kids started thinking it was hokey to go to the country with their parents and ride the hay cart out to the fields to pick out and cut down their own special tree, that was it. Done! I assemble a tree out of a box now and spray the room with balsam scent or light a scented candle and call it a day. It looks just as pretty as the real thing and it's a lot easier. I've gotten very un-sentimental in my old age.

My guess as to why people are decorating for X-Mas so early is that they watch the retailers too much. Retailers have realized that Halloween and Thanksgiving are not good very profitable, so they go straight to Christmas stuff, in hopes of making Black Friday come earlier. Personally, I like the tiny Christmas lights year round, but only when used sparingly.

Since I do not have kids, I just use the local Christmas trees for my own, like this one at Destin Commons:
