Normally I give cash for gifts to guys who are graduating. This year I have a very special grad, and I want to give him something memorable and/or useful. Ideas? He enjoys history and the military. Just a great all around kid who has overcome unbelieveable learning disblilites to graduate.

cash sure beats any other graduation gift I ever recieved. If you are not giving cash, may I suggest staying away from gifts of a single towel and washcloth, brass luggage tags which are engraved with his current mailing address which will soon be changing, three Holy Bibles gold embossed with his name on the cover, travel alarm clock, dress socks, wallet, etc. You see, the graduations gifts I received are memorable, but not in a good way. I do remember the people  who gave cash.

After all of that schooling, he might need a massage -- maybe a gift certificate at a spa. Stop laughing, I'd use it.

How about a great book and some cash? I know from experience that sometimes what mothers think is a great gift for their child's friends at graduation, simply gather dust.

I agree with all of the above.

Cash and a card enclosed with a letter expessing your thoughtful sentiments. I have cards/letters I received from special adults from over 30 years ago. I'll never forget how much they meant to me or how they touched my life.

Don't know what your spending limit is, but as someone who loves and knows the life value of travel I'd say a Eurail pass, a journal and/or and round trip airline ticket.

Honestly, cash may not be the best gift, as it may easily be spent on incidentals and soon be gone. A gift card in the same amount to home depot may be good so it can be used on his new apt, etc. or, a gift relating to his new job.

or a laptop sleeve or bag from http://www.sfbags.com/index.htm

Love the site....will check into that option.

I remember those days. cash is all ya want or need. a gift card would be second best, but still appreciated. can't really think of anything else very useful beyond that (besides a new car or laptop).

I would love to give this guy a car. He is just an amazing person. From a child in third grade that could not read or do simple math computation to a high school grad going to college, just gives me goose bumps! His desire to continue learning never ends. If other students with the ability cared as much!

Thanks for your thoughts...keep them coming!

Ok, reading between the lines here, is this guy a student of yours? If so, the trip may be a bit much, but I always shoot for the stars! ;-)

If he's a history and military buff then I can definitely recommend the PBS series entitled [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Civil-War/dp/B000BITUE8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-4950690-5395011?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1179073770&sr=1-2"]The Civil War[/ame] a documentary film by Ken Burns. 5 DVDs and 11 hours of amazing history, photos, letters and historical analysis from top historians. To truly understand this country and how it has come to be as we know it one must understand the Civil War.
