But "Taps" is such a great movie, depressing or not. I saw "Full Metal Jacket" on a first date. Bad omen.

The very serious kid that follows Timothy Hutton around everywhere was my grade school crush- Donald Kimmel.

Tell me what you liked about it (and I really mean that.) I'm trying to figure out how to frame an intelligent conversation with the boys about it when I say, "Hail no we ain't watching that in class!"

2 of the worst first/last date movies for me were "Robocop" and "Dumb and Dumber."

Great characters mainly. I thought they were portrayed well.

They really were great characters. But in the end all I could think that the Cadet Commander's @$$hole father was the only one who had it right--it was a good idea executed very badly. My kids don't need any reinforcement in that!

Movies from the 80s spent a lot of time focusing on the bungled and the botched, didn't they?

I can appreciate a depressing movie if it is depressing because of the story line, such as death, war, etc. and the acting is great and the movie well presented.

If it is depressing because its just a lousy movie, then no I really don't want to waste my time and money.

For example "Places in the Heart" is one of the saddest movies I can think of and I love that movie. Sally Field and Danny Glover are just fantastic and I can watch it over and over and cry and cry but will still like it when it's over, because it was well done.
