I am so torn:

On the one hand I have long inflammatory posts telling me that the sky is falling and gangs will be taking over my backyard any day.

On the other hand I have conversations with various law enforcement agencies (Sheriff, US Marshall's etc.) as far east as Panama City and as far West as Ft. Walton telling me that I shouldn't worry as the gangs and criminals prefer Pensacola and PC to this area.

Whatever is a poor confused Scooterbug to do?

Being from the East End of the County, I have been made aware of a few instances where suspected gang members/wanna be's have entered Walton County to commit crimes. I wish the current administration would release any data they might have that relates to this.

Your post is very interesting as it does relate to a large scale community (Tallahassee) but it does reference new alternative methods of gang organization and identification. Something to watch out for. Out of the current canidates, who do you feel has the best pulse on this situation in our communitity and its surrounding areas?

Just because we aren't encouraging the Watcher and jumping on the hysteria bandwagon doesn't mean we aren't taking the issue seriously. :roll:

As with any topic posted (especially an inflammatory one) I do my own research and form my own conclusions.

While it is definitely good to be vigilant and aware of things, gangs in Sowal isn't even cracking the top 20 on my list of concerns.

I believe that when and if there is a gang problem in walton county then we should certainly discuss it here and share any information that may be helpful to residents and visitors.

meanwhile, I find The Watch's posts completely inappropriate for this community and for this board. Our county is very different from the areas he compares us to.

Any of the safety issues in SoWal have been and will continue to be discussed at length on this board by citizens in the know, in a productive way, in a helpful way, to benefit residents and visitors.

I would take the Watcher's posts more seriously if he/she didn't appear to have some sort of agenda with the Sheriff's election. Why in the world is this person so hell bent on making us worry about gangs? Apparently he/she won't be happy until we are totally freaked about the existence of gangs in SoWal.

GM2: I've heard that Panama City, Panama City Beach, Destin, and Ft. Walton are great places for gang members to move to. The law enforcement is pretty lax down there.
GM1: Yes, but I want to live in a small community that the kids will enjoy and we can walk to everything.
GM2: You're in luck, there is a wonderful place in between called 30A, and apparently the real estate prices are falling. The realtors will gladly take our suitcase of cash!

It's not the fact that the watcher has an agenda, it's the fact that they use newpaper articles from other counties. We are bordered by Bay, Washington, Holmes (to the East) and Okaloosa (to the West) counties. We are a full counties width from Gadsden county. I realize the gangs can obtain cars and drive, however Gadsden county is much more an outlying area of Tallahassee. The day that I see an article in the Walton Sun regarding a gang, gang incident, or gang activity in South Walton I'll start worrying about. Until such time I have plenty else on my plate.

Doesn't sound new to me. Three of the perps have the same last name, so I am going to assume they are related. So three people from one screwed up family recruit two stupid screwed up druggie friends for a crime spree. This is as old as the hills, and could happen anywhere, including SoWal. What is "new" here is to redefine this as an alternative method of gang organization and all the other law enforcement hoopla refererenced in the article. :roll:
