I'm giving up on making cro?tons. I pulled out some slices of bread and placed them on a wire rack, four days ago. I think they are more moist now, than when I put them out. My windows are open, and the humidity has increased, so homemade air-dried cro?tons are not going to be made at my house until it gets hot enough that I crank up the old A/C, unless someone else has a working suggestion. :dunno:

Cube bread, toss with a bit of olive oil, melted butter, grated parma cheese and flavorings of your choosing (seasoned salt; garlic or onion powder; dried herbs); spread on tray; toast in oven set at 350; for about 20 minutes tossing cubes half-way through.

You're confusing a 'stale bread' recipe for croutons.

air drying is just the easiest way, if the air is dry enough, and you don't have to fire up the rubbing sticks. Makes good cro?tons, or un-toasted toast for dips.

My personal opinion is that 99% of croutons are so tasteless that they're not worth eating (that is, unless you make them from scratch as indicated by previous posters).

The following is an indication of how tasteless they usually are. Daughter and I were dining out, and I was having a salad. I wasn't wearing my glasses (trying to look glamorous), and I commented, "Gosh, these sure are crunchy croutons." Daughter said, "Mom, those aren't croutons, they are broken dishes!" :yikes:She was right. But they tasted just as good as most croutons one gets while dining out, just crunchier. Now I don't eat them any more. If I want carbs with my salad, I'll have bread.;-)
