Just finished Twilight. It is our book club pick for June. I read it in one day (500 pages of page turning fun) - a perfect, mindless beach read. It is supposed to be a young adult book, one of the moms read it with her 13 year old daughter, liked it so much that we are all reading it!

Our next pick is The Book Thief.

I really liked Water For Elephants. I have A Thousand Splended Suns by Khaled Hosseini on tap. But I haven't emotionally geared up for it yet.

I am currently reading The Bible. My son got a great version from his preschool for his preschool graduation. Even though it's geared toward kids, I personally think it's the perfect version for myself! And he eagerly awaits reading it every night -- which is a bit bizarre to me. :dunno: I try to explain some of the words to him and he understands some of the lighter stories. But I think 5 yr olds just enjoy being read to -- especially books with lots of words and substance versus a Dr. Seuss (althought he loves those, too). This really is our first major book to read together. We are half way through the Old Testament. I think we might do a Harry Potter book next!

A Thousand Splendid Suns was one of my favorite books last year. I read both Kiterunner and TSS; both excellent with male and female perspectives.

I have not gotten through the whole Bible. I would love to!

Does anyone have any experience with the Good Reads website. www.goodreads.com It's similar to a virtual bookclub, I think -- which is about all I have time for. I haven't joined it yet. But think I might soon. I love to find out what people are reading -- especially from people who share the same taste. I hate that I end up reading all commercial bestsellers. It's like only watching hollywood blockbusters. They are enjoyable for sure -- but sometimes the soul needs a little indie film!

Somewhat Enlightening and Interesting Reads

"Armageddon in Retrospect" -Kurt Vonnegut (the late KV's son Mark put together this book of short stories and letters from WWII never before published, some are hilariously funny but others are kind of depressing)

"Ghost Wars"-Steve Coll (I just started this one.. subtitle explains it all: 'The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, And Bin Laden, From The Soviet Union To September 10,2001').

"The Thirteen American Arguments" -MSNBC's Chris Matthews has called Newsweek's Howard Fineman's new book the bible on American politics and culture.

"The Coming China Wars"-Peter Navarro

Guilty Beach Novels

"The Appeal"- John Grisham (like most of his novels, it's predictable but still soooo good...read it about three weekends ago, and couldn't put it down)

"A Man Without A Country" -Kurt Vonnegut (so a little repetitive here, but I first read this book in ninth grade...every friend I have loaned it too has laughed out loud during the first few pages...really quick read, you could finish it in one sitting at the beach...but does require a certain type of humor).

"Dear American Airlines"- Jonathan Miles (Okay, I haven't actually read this one. I have a stack of books eleven feet high in my room that I'm in the process of reading, but last time I was in a bookstore I saw this new release from NY Times Columnist Miles...I became engrossed with it and found myself unconsciously sitting on the floor reading through the first few pages...it's a cross between Lewis Black anger and David Sedaris prose...I plan on going back this week to pick it up).
