DeSoto Park is very beautiful!! That area of Alabama is well worth driving to, especially if you like hiking and glorious mountain views. It also puts you in close proximity to a retail store that more than adequately reflects the economy we're in. ;-) http://www.unclaimedbaggage.com/ I'd go there, Shelly, just for the entertainment value. You'll be shaking your head for years at what people put in their luggage that ends up lost.

If you are coming in November SHELLY, some girlfriends and I have a cabin booked for Nov 11-17 at Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville for our bi-annual get together. A girls weekend. We would love to have you. :D

We used to live on Tim's Ford Lake, it is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Lake Guntersville is beautiful also, we tried to get a cabin there for our trip, but they were booked.

Also, Monte Sano State Park here in Huntsville. Beautiful this time of year.

http://www.alapark.com/MonteSano/ Check out their website. They have cabins and a beautiful lodge. I think I might talk my friends into changing our plans and staying here.

Where ever you go have funn, relax and enjoy. I think we all need a break!!!

Check out the view from the cabins at Monte Sano!!!

I grew up in Huntsville, and my family is from Fayettville TN. The JD plant is great this time of year, and is just cool to see how they make the Booz. Lake Guntersville is nice, but not a lot to do unless you talke a boat with you. Desoto state park is beautiful, if you are lucky the leaves will have started to change. The cabins are very nice in the park. Huntsville has the space and rocket center. It is cool to see if you have not been. I used to enjoy Tims Ford, but then again if you dont have a boat you are limited. Fayettville Tn is a nice place to visit. Lots of little shops and things to check out.

Good luck
Let us know about your trip.

Mark

go hang-gliding over LookOut Mtn. Only a short drive from Chattanooga, and a blast! There is a small village of hang-glider peeps over in Alabama, and you can go tandem, so that you can relax a bit. It is as close to flying like a bird as you will ever get.

Here is a sample, but they have other ways to start, which are a little less intimidating.
YouTube - Mountain Launch at Lookout Mountain Flight Park

(notice the guy with the broken leg (aka - experience) is giving the instructions). Taking off from the cliff is the most dangerous, as a wind gust can ef you up badly.

I was hyperventilating just watching that!!!! I've been there and have seen the hang gliding, it's amazing.

My husband has a home on Lookout Mountain and his family has a farm up there as well. It's a gorgeous area! Lots to see and wonderfully sweet people you'll meet.

SHELLY, SHELLY please don't go. :sosad: OK go. But don't go hang gliding until you tell us when you see things turning around. Since you were so astute about calling the meltdown, you must have something to say.

Call my friend Angela Wood and see if she still handles any rentals there in Mentone.

http://www.lookoutmountainproperties.com

Her father Jack Jones has had property there forever and he is one of the original investors in the Chattanooga ChooChoo, his name is on one of the cars. Read about him here: http://www.cloudmont.com/comesit.htm I adore that man he is a character! He is usually at the dude ranch and is slowing down a lot, last I talked to her a couple of months ago he was still alive and telling tales at Shady Grove Dude Ranch, go horseback riding! It's a blast and you can't find more funn guides. FFF loves the grass landing strip at the dude ranch, I won't dare land there!

Her brother runs the southern most ski lodge in America:

We call him "Snowman" and he brought me the biggest bottle of champagne I have ever had for the Y2K New Years Eve party we had there. There is a tragic tale about the snow making machine, one of the sons was killed the day they started it up, something went wrong with it and there was an explosion. :sosad:

WOW. You know Angela Wood? I'm from Ft. Payne and my husband (ex) bought a piece of property on Little River Canyon from Angela. I grew up in those mountains. Such a beautiful place!!!!! I have stayed in a cabin at Desoto. Sparse but clean. Mentone, and Canyongrill very good choices.

Tell me where to go...in Northern Alabama & Southern Tenn that is.

Calling all folks who live up north or traveled these byways to chime in with advice.

I've had it up to here <gesturing with chopping motion over head> with the economy....I need about a week-long roadtrip to clear my head and stimulate the senses--and the economy at the same time. Want to see some trees and feed the fishes (but not in the Soprano's-type way).

Thinking of stopping by Lake Guntersville; DeSoto State Park; Tims Ford State Park (TN) and Jack Daniel's Place for some early Christmas shopping.

That's the plan--help me fill in the details.

Thanx.

Shel.

Go thru Chattanooga, hang a right thru Ocoee National Forest, Ocoee River and arrive in Western NC for the fall foilage. SGG and I are heading that way next week. Color will be at it's peak by then. VERY BEAUTIFUL!!!! Come stay with us!
