I'll post in the politcal thread:
My sister and I have been debating today about campaigning. Not necessarily talking about who is the better candidate.
I have heard several people say, Obama's campaign blames the current adminitration for the financial crisis. My sister was one of these people. She explained that there is a GLOBAL financial crisis and that it is not rooted with the current administration and not even with the U.S. She finds it very unfair that the Obama campaign is using this false information.
I pointed out that in every election I can remember, the current administration (Republican or Democrat) is pointed at for any crisis occuring at that point. This is not an Obama or a Democrat specific trend.
Her next statement though, threw me. She said, "especially when Clinton is responsible for the whole Fannie Mae debacle because he pushed to get loans to everyone because all people should be able to buy a house even if they can't afford it or don't deserve it." Wait, didn't she just say that it was a global issue?
She then sent me an article from a 1999 NY Times article citing pressure from Clinton and stock holders pushing Fannie Mae to give loans to people who barely missed qualifying. This, I guess, is supposed to prove Clinton and the Dems were at fault. She didn't mention the stock holders (she is a stock broker). She also didn't seem to believe that administrators at Fannie Mae were responsible for running the business properly and keeping the bottom line in mind. She also did not mention the current investigation into Fannie's cooked books. She said that:
The point was that Obama's campaign says that it is because of bad Bush economics that caused the economy and markets to topple. It isn't meant to be blaming Clinton - it is just that it was under his administration and democrats policy making that got the ball rolling in the wrong direction. This is an article that was written by someone in Sept 1999 foreseeing the problems with the loosening of credit to borrowers and it is the democrats who generally are the ones who want socialistic style policy so that everyone can be a home owner or whatever the cause may be.
How long has Bush been in office? If Clinton got a ball rolling why didn't Bush stop the ball?
My point (glad I am coming to it?) is not Republicans are wrong, Dems are right or vice versa. It is not that Bush screwed up the economy or Clinton did.
MY POINT is
when the side that one supports is blamed for something, it is deemed unfair or impossible for it to have happened that way. However, the blame can be placed on the other side very easily. It goes both ways, the system is broken, too much us vs them, too much blaming instead of working to pull together. Too many fallacious arguments dominating decision making instead of well researched, well informed decisions.
People are hurting financially and medically. We have to find a way out of Iraq Our kids need to be educated and our teachers need to be top notch and well paid for their service. Our environment is going to hell in a handbasket. WHO has the best plan, the best qualifications, the best chance of making things better?
People are prepared to vote based on race (one way or the other), age, years of service, military record, one sound bite, one photo. Please, read read read, and not just the mainstream news which is so biased. Find the stuff on your own, figure out what YOU believe our country should be and then find out which one you truly believe will get us there.
AND THEN, no matter who you decide to vote for, get out and vote!
