Based on the article, it sounds like she wan't fired for saying Merry Christmas, she was fired for something else (can't imagine what, as the economy is doing great and she seems so agreeable and non-confrontational) and is using "Merry Christmas" to get publicity and $.

From the article: ""I will go on the record as saying Miss Thomas was not terminated for saying 'Merry Christmas,'" Phillips told FOXNews.com. "A lot of the information that?s been disseminated is absolutely false. It?s definitely a very distorted version of what actually happened."

BTW, what is so wrong w/ Happy Holidays? :dunno: News flash - not everyone is Christian or celebrates Christmas!

The local news article says that she DID offer to say the standard greeting but they only wanted "Happy Holidays" I personally think that with all the non- Christian suits that have been filed and won in the US recently that she probably has a very good chance of winning this based on recent verdicts for non-Christians.

She lost her $10.50 an hour job for a week and a half and wants a minimum of $25K in compensation.

This isn't about a Christmas greeting IMO, that's just the button they chose to push to get their way.

You don't perform your job the way your employer wants you to, you are subject to discipline or termination. Forcing your religious beliefs upon the patrons of the business you work for is most certainly legitimate grounds for being fired.

She wasn't fired for saying Merry Christmas, she was fired for insubordination. She was told to use a certain script and didn't want to. She refused to do what her boss told her to and was fired.

She is trying to drag religious freedom into this. I don't think it's going to fly. They were not asking her to defame her religion they were asking her to be inclusive of all religions. Happy Holidays is the simplest way to do this. Otherwise she would have been on the phone for 15 minutes to include every religion, belief, whatever.

If she really wants to answer the phone with Merry Christmas I'm sure one of the local churches or religious organizations will be happy to look over her resume.

For some sects of Christianity, asking a Christian to be inclusive of all religious is sacrilegious. Their goal is to evangelize and convert. So, if this lady was doing just that, she may have a legitimate legal case against her employer for discriminating against religion. I'd hate to be a lawyer and have to argue either side on this one, knowing only the snip-it I've read on here.

The Fox news report actually reads exactly as was reported by the local news.

This is gonna be real hard for the right wing republicans. Religious or employers rights.

This is not hard at all, the lady has the right to say what she wants and the employer has the right to work who he wants. Case closed.

I suspect there is more to it than that as I cannot see firing someone for saying Merry Christmas. I could be wrong though.
