If anyone is looking for help with their edible garden, either getting started, design, or implementation, I can help.

CFH Design Studio can provide hourly consultation, design an overall plan, or build and maintain the garden for you. Specializing in small urban size lots and primarily edible, herbal, and medicinal gardens.

See my signature below or pm me.

Chandra is a terrific designer! She listens well to what the client wants, draws up a lovely plan accordingly, then revises as needed according to client's needs. Very creative, great understanding of design, use of space, form, color...and expert in sustainability/green/restorative materials and methods.

Now I need to go find this garden group.

My latest gardening whim is to plant food past its prime - partial onions that have sprouted, potatoes that sprout etc.

So now I've got a bunch of potato plants and the question is - how do I know when they're really to harvest - what with them being underground and all. ;-)

When the tops (plant) has turned brown.
Keep soil mounded over the potatoes as they grow and start to push up toward the surface, so they don't get sunburned. (or They might look like that girl in SJs photo:rotfl:)

Well, now I know how to plant a potato. No wonder I couldn't find the potato seeds at Wal Mart or Home Depot:blink:

Do you know if it's the same ripened premise for carrots? I planted a seed pack and it looks like every single one started.

We used to just check them off and on. You'll see the "shoulders" (?) start to push above ground when they get bigger. Pull them at whatever stage/size you like. If they need thinning and you fail to do that, they won't have room to make decent-sized carrots. They'll likely need thinned as it is hard to plant carrot seeds without some clumping.

Glad to see you doing this!...I gave up vegetable gardening in hot climates years back - for the most part anyway. I really shouldn't be so lazy....

Happy Gardening!..

One more question about thinning. I speant about 50 bucks on seeds thinking that was about right. I didn't expect the thousands of seedlings I have now. My rows are about 4 feet apart. Do you know if it's possible to pull up seedlings and put them in new rows? I just hate to kill off so many plants.
:dunno:
