Those of us that still know how to load a gun and bait a hook and haven't lived beyound their means will be OK. As Dolly Parton ounce said your not poor unless you think your poor.

You know I don't think I've ever had Tomato Aspic.

I like this thread. My answer to the question -- YES! Gratitude is a huge part of it for me as well. Even on a day when my attitude is the worst, I can still look at green trees, blue skies, amazing white sand, birds and all kinds of other beautiful creatures, while breathing fresh, clean air. All of us who live here have that to be thankful for.

So things are changing -- we change to adapt, or create a new way for ourselves. (That song is so right, security is a myth they tell to make it easier take away your freedom!) Maybe change is not as easy as the same-ole-same-ole, especially for an old dog like me. But I didn't much care for the way things had been going for a long time (on many levels), and hope this current upheaval becomes the inspiration for our country to set itself aright, reawaken to and embrace our greatness, and put it to proper use again.

I would very much like to see part of that reawakening to be that some of our virtually irrelevant/failing institutions will get with the program and actually serve the purposes they need to be serving, gov't and education system not least among them. In some cases, I already see this happening and am most grateful:

For instance, one local church has started serving free suppers one night a week, and is planning to open a preschool -- something we've never had enough of in this area. For another instance, our local extension service is reaching out in unprecendented ways to help farmers and other citizens find ways to improve their products or develop new "value added" ones, marketing, branding, cooperation, etc. For yet another, the TDC is planning an environmental forum for this year with an intended outcome that will benefit the community and offer a new dimension of enjoyment for our visitors -- starting community gardens (other than the fantastic one already in place at Seaside Neighborhood School).

So far, I am personally involved in supporting two of the above four activities, and hope to find time/energy to help out with the other two as well. I believe strengthening our local community is one of the most effective ways to make life better for us all, in good times and hard ones too.

Yes Yes Yes, we are gonna make it, and I'm very happy to see the resilience and creativity and generosity I see coming forth from my friends and neighbors.
