Right here!
Maybe we should spend less time labeling people, and a little more time getting to know each individual personally? Isn't that a basic belief for both of these general groups? Or is there so much hate out there today from the far sides of the poltiical isle that that has become impossible?

I think less labeling is a great idea--no one is always one thing: we are made up of the sum of our experiences...

Certainly hope that most of us can view the fringe elements, as just that--fringe, and temper the absolutes with a bit of wisdom and tolerance...I think we can.:DEspecially if we eat more ice cream cones!

That's laughable. Conservative decision making is based on faith which is the antithesis of thought and reason. You know at the end of the day they all cry themselves to sleep at night.

Also laughable. Stating that conservative decision making is based entirely on faith is a simplistic view and makes it seem like every person with a conservative tendency is a "holy-roller". I'm not surprised though, because, making funn of others faith seems to highlight the elitism that pervades the platform of the new ?progressive? Democratic party.

Although you're waving your Liberal flag high now, I'm sure you probably have some conservative views as well. We all do. The problem is that when talking about Liberal vs. Conservative attitudes, it always end up with the Left arguing points with the Right and vice versa.

Thought and reason should place you somewhere in the middle. If someone is not in the middle, then they are outside the curve... period. Since the great majority of people aren't in the extreme right or left, they are probably just kidding themselves into thinking that they have only conservative or liberal views and they just follow the herd.

Just my 2 cents.

I am comfortable with what I believe, my core principles. I do not care what others think about what I believe, it is their right to disagree with me. Whichever view is supported by the majority of voters; if that view does not infringe on someones God-given rights (Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness) is the view that Public Policy should center around. If I don't like the policy, rally the voters my way.

That said, I am FOR as little government intrusion into my affairs as possible, less government taking of my property (Less taxes) and a strong defense against those who wish to take away my Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. I am not for defending other countries unless there is a clear benefit to the USA. Thus I was not in favor of the Iraq war but favor the Afgani War. I am against abortion because it takes away the right to life from the newborn. I am pro-death penalty for murder because someone who unlawfully takes a life should forfeit theirs. I respect the Catholics/Christians who do not agree.

I believe Social Security for my children should be more of a IRA type investment fund. Unfortunately it is too late to change for anyone over 30. I do not believe government run health care is in the best iterests of our citizens. Individuals should make their health care decisions. Choosing not to have insurance is a choice. Sometimes choices are wrong and the results painful.

I am for alternative fuels because our economic well-being cannot be hostage to a bunch of tin horn dictators. Ditto Nuclear power. I think the free market system is the best system, but it is not perfect. I recognize that sometimes businesses fail and people are hurt. We cannot promise positive results, only equal opportunity.

I am against gay marriage. Marriage is reserved to one man one woman by centuries of tradition and legal code. But I recognize the right for individuals to enter into a contract which includes power of attorney and co-ownership of property. I do not care and do not want to know what anyone does in the privacy of their home unless it effects another's Life, Liberty or Pursuit of Happiness. Someone's personal life should not be held against them in the workplace or in receiving opportunities unless they bring their personal business into that arena.

I reserve the right to change my opinion if further facts come to light.

Finally, I respect those who do not agree with me and make an effort to refrain from name-calling and other non-productive behavior. Unfortunately I am far from perfect.

Good post Idlewind. I don't see some things the same as you but we need those differences.

You say "Choosing not to have insurance is a choice." In some cases it seems the choice may be between rent, food, or insurance ......... which do you think goes unpaid? Right! Let's face it, there are hardworking people amongst us who have to make tougher choices than we do just to get by. I see people who labor harder for longer hours at jobs that pay less who "choose?" to go uninsured rather than hungry. ijs

And what is "Catholics/Christians"?
