On my trip throughout the UK--once folks knew that I was an American--one of the very first things they asked was, "What do you think of President Obama?" I told them that I believed he was the only person for the job of President that could steer America through this financial crisis (...not fix it, just get us to the other side)...and they all agreed--ALL of them. Obama is like a rock star to the folks over there and he and the First Lady are held in high esteem...moreover, they also think that Americans did the right thing by selecting him to lead the USA.

Just an observation--but somehow I think that the McCain/Palin team would not have generated the same interest or admiration from our friends across the pond.

From the moment I stepped off the ship in UK, headlines <in fonts and point-size reserved for declarations of war> were screaming how the MPs were fiddling their expense accounts. The entire country was in an uproar and on the verge of a total political meltdown; I expected there would soon be a strong demand for torches and pitchforks--it was a political mess, and included all the parties. And yet, in the midst of all of that, I was amazed to see folks stop and watch Obama speak when he came on TV, and a few even passed comment that they wished the UK had someone like that.

Maybe the majority of the US has lost confidence in our leader (if one is to believe the GOP rhetoric)--but from my perspective, and from my observations, he's one of the best on earth at present.

I've noticed this throughout my travels at how other countries relish in our poiltics. A socialized country wants a socialized America and it appears they are getting their wish with Obama.

I've chosen to not discuss American politics with non citizens or those who don't vote here. I just politely decline to comment but defer to them and ask something about their country! ;-) I agree, McCain/Palin would be hated in Socialized Europe!

what is socialism? is it when the government gives big tax breaks to large corporations, so large that they pay very little or no taxes? i know you will say it's all about job creation. well, pre-Obama, you had the anti government party in power for 6 of the 8 years, and we ended up with greed creating the end result. too bad we can't trust people in power to do the right thing. i'm so sick and tired of people whining about government regulations. do you like what has happened to your 401K's because of deregulation? how about healthcare? i had to purchase a miniscule tube of eye ointment yesterday - my insurance saved me a whopping $27 but i still had to pay $92!!!! all i could think of was what if i was one of the many people who work retail and fast food jobs - how would i ever be able to afford this drug?? if so many companies weren't out to screw everyone and make 1,000 percent profit, we might not need government regulations.

If your 401K is down, it's because you didn't manage it well enough. How is regulation going to keep your 401K balance high? It's not, but it might stymie growth that keeps it from growing. Also, how is government regulation going to make your eye ointment less expensive? Or get your insurance company to pay more of your medical costs? Maybe you're confusing "regulation" with subsidy? Regulation usually increases rather than decreases costs.

Comments?

I am very happy that I am registered with NO party! Not even registered as independent - zero party affiliation.

But after listening to this video and other coments on Fox News (Jon Stewart shows GREAT clips) I just might have to become a staunch Dem and get active.

My policy is usually not to discuss religion, politics or The Great Pumpkin, but I feel so much hate toward Obama from certain STRONG groups that I know I need to, in a civilized and positive way, work against that.

Can you believe that many people here in my community actually THINK (hmmm, maybe not the best choice of words) that Obama is the Anit-Christ! They have told me that to my face. And they also believe that he is a terrorist Muslim. They are frightened!

I have always tried very hard to give the party in power the benefit of the doubt, to support who my president is, etc... (up to a point) But goodness, some people haven't given this admin. a single day's worth of support and that is sad for this nation.

i always get a kick out of those that think that somehow we should care what other nations think. And as if the media there is close to fair and balanced or even informative for that matter. That would be like msnbc being the only source of info here in the u.s. Is this the same europe that already went down the big government, socialistic road and is has now drastically moved right in the last elections? When the phony obama mania smoke has cleared, perhaps some will see the failure's that are staring us all in the face. Time will tell all as it always does. Unfortunately, the koolaid will continue flowing into some......

Glad to provide you with your daily dose of amusement :D

To deny that the US can survive economically separate and apart from the rest of the world is folly. When the smoke clears from this "Made in America" global financial crisis, what other nations "think" of what remains of the US will either make us or break us going forward.

I agree with 30Ashopper regarding the assets. My assets were fairly well positioned so I lost very, very little in that. It's my income that dropped drastically. Fortunately, I am resourceful and not dependent upon the government - I will get there. I have shifted gears, and shifted gears in staying ahead of this recession.

As far as the insurance issues, there is another thread regarding that. If you work for a large corporation, you should have a menu from which to choose a medical plan that suits your needs. There should be plans covering from 100% to a bare minumum. Often times, when one chooses a plan that doesn't cover everything, they have a surprise medical expense and then feel it's a problem with the system. Not saying this is the case with you, however.

Everyone needs to live within their means and make necessary adjustments. I am not for Big Government and I am not for socializing a dang thang in this country. I am for people working hard and using their talents to provide for themselves. This does not mean I am not charitable.....just wanted to cover that off before I get called a 'meanie' or something worse. And, the proverbial wave..... ;-)

I agree - in global markets, we are work (or should) work together. However, just because other nations are socialized doesn't mean we have to become that. Nor should we ever try to please or appease another nation when it comes to our standards.

If I don't want to trade with Mom and Pop down the street, I go one street over.....I don't project my beliefs on what obviously works for Mom and Pop down the street.

When I travel, I generally can get CNN and BBC. I prefer BBC over CNN any day of the week.....

BBC has no hype! I love to watch it too. I keep thinking they will pour tea any second and discuss the matter rationally and calmly unlike the circus we witness when watching any of our news stations (except News Hour)
