More early morning musing from Miss Kitty...

I am guilty...sue me. :D I have sued (ooops, Freudian, meant used) the term tort reform many times around here without really understanding the bomb it is politically....I confess i had no idea that what I deemed to be common sense was political! I have been reading up on tort reform and what I thought was a term used to correct the overuse and abuse of our legal system is much more far reaching.

I have to thank BeachSiO2 and bdarg for pushing me to read more about the subject. My quest for info started here Tort reform - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and has led me to many interesting sites. My ADD (surely I can sue someone for that condition...wonder who delivered me?), will make it hard for me to stick with a long sit and read about the subject, so I am requesting a good, healthy debate on the subject here. Give it your best shot and please...keep it civil...name calling really turns me off.

Thank you in advance for helping me and maybe others understand this issue.

Are you still an advocate (no pun intended) of tort reform with regard to health care reform? Just curious~~~~~~

Commendations to Miss Kitty,
I sadly believe that we tend to come to the "discussion table" with a pre-conceived idea of whatever the issue of the day is. Today political buzzwords are flying around so fast and furious that it's hard to keep up, and seriously, politics is much like religion gone wrong. The truth is imprisoned in confusing jargon, held by the hierarchy of "ministers" and the political layman is kept in the dark awaiting a handout of propaganda pre-packaged as the "truth". I know this discussion is about Tort reform but for an example, the healthcare bill.. anyone read the entire 1000+ pages? Can you understand it? Do you trust whomever is appointed to implement and interpret it? These are fundamental real questions.

Be strong enough to look at both sides of an argument before a judgment is made.
Healthcare reform, Cap and trade and Tort Reform are complex important issues not to be left to political ministers interpretations.
Do the work and prove Bill Maher wrong..

For some good information from a different point of view, try:

ATRA :: The American Tort Reform Association

From their site:

Facts About Tort Liability And Its Impact On Consumers

Overall Impact: The United States Economy
  • The cost of the U.S. tort system for 2003 was $246 billion, or $845 per citizen or $3,380 for a family of four.
  • U.S. tort costs increased 35.4 percent from 2000 to 2003.
  • The Growth of U.S. tort costs have exceeded the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2-3 percentage points in the past 50 years.
  • The U.S. tort system is inefficient; it returns less than 50 cents on the dollar and less than 22 cents for actual economic loss to claimants.

Thanks! I ran across this site this morning.

More telling to me is the lack of posts and debate I requested. The silence speaks volumes to me.

I'm seeing some silence on another thread too  ;-)
