But what is the definition of highest regard? Your standard? My standard? Maybe in my opinion, my standard is higher than yours?
We can play semantics all day long. My standard is pretty damn high. I am sure yours is, too. We can accept either or both.:D

It is not semantics. It is an individual demanding that others "be as patriotic as he is, or they are not patriots".

Andy, I understand where you are coming from, but what you are demanding can't really be defined in fair terms. Do you think I am a patriot? The definition has stayed the same, but the usage of the word has changed so much.

This is really like Christians telling other Christians that they are "Christian enough".

It's clear that the idea of patriotism is steeped in emotion. This is not a bad thing at all, but it makes a one size fits all definition impossible. The only problem I have is when it's steeped in dogma. I've seen that on other threads and may be seeing it here.

I think patriotism holds different meanings for everyone. I've experienced Austrians who were patriotic to their nation and French who were not.

It runs deeply in some and due to lifes' experiences, perhaps not as deeply for others.

Geo, I agree with you. I have read other threads that the name calling was out of control and those weren't closed. But, we assimilate/acclimate and that's beneficial for all, I hope.

Here's something for you. Ten quotes from ten different people in different centuries. Ten different opinions for you, too.

My vote's on Mark Twain, George Washington, and Charles de Gaulle. I can certainly see that Oscar has no bats in his belfry, either. Bob Dylan needs grow a spine and state a firm decision, so wishy-washy! And Ann Coullter needs to be a little more specific about naming an enemy, just so I can stop hating the wrong person.

Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism - how passionately I hate them!
Albert Einstein

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.
Mark Twain

Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.
George Washington

I define nothing. Not beauty, not patriotism. I take each thing as it is, without prior rules about what it should be.
Bob Dylan

Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious.
Oscar Wilde

Each nation feels superior to other nations. That breeds patriotism - and wars.
Dale Carnegie

Liberals become indignant when you question their patriotism, but simultaneously work overtime to give terrorists a cushion for the next attack and laugh at dumb Americans who love their country and hate the enemy.
Ann Coulter

Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first.
Charles de Gaulle

The greater the state, the more wrong and cruel its patriotism, and the greater is the sum of suffering upon which its power is founded.
Leo Tolstoy

Patriotism is usually stronger than class hatred, and always stronger than internationalism.
George Orwell

I love Einstein! Am with you Mermaid on Mark Twain , George Washington and Bob Dylan (although I like his music and his son's). I'm not sure I agree with Dale Carnegie and am surprised by his interpretation, Charles de Gualle - MWAH, I don't agree with Tolstoy, but what a literary genius and George Orwell is spot on.

Interesting span over centuries.

My Analogy:

Patriotism is like being a parent, proud of when your offspring (i.e., your country) does something great and unselfish or inspiring for the world (the neighborhood)...

And not proud of that child (i.e.,your country) and speaking out when they do wrong, and when the child hurts people, damages property, or gets an arrogant attitude.
