Guess it was just a matter of time! :bang:

Would someone please tell the airlines that the REASON I have a carry-on bag is for the items they don't provide, that I can't check because of theft concerns, and to sustain me when they strand me for multiple hours or days!

Seriously, I throw in a couple magazines and a book, and all the rest of my bag is for airport/airplane survival & comfort!!!

Right here!
I wouldn't mind if they charged for extra carry-on luggage. I'm sick and tired of walking onto every plane with my single, compact samsonite carry on and not having room in the overhead bin above me seat to store it. People have been abusing that privilege in order to avoid extra checked baggage fees.

I don't think people are "abusing that privilege". I think the airlines WANT us to carry on, so they can reduce their baggage handling costs.

Some people are pretty ridiculous with that. I've seen refugees flee with less baggage than people regularly bring on planes!

One bag and one personal item is totally doable/reasonable.

I would have no problem with them enforcing the carry-on rules, but not charging people yet another fee for what I see as a basic necessity.

Scooterbug, I fly a lot and I've seen the folks you're talking about a lot. I find them as big a pain as you do, not only on the plane, but also at TSA.

Most airlines have a "one-and-one" rule already. If the gate agents don't enforce it, what does that say?

BTW, I'm getting a good laugh from the new Southwest "bags fly free" commercials on TV. :D

They try to temper it by saying that the fare will be 40 bucks cheaper. Funny...the last time I bought a ticket I don't remember them breaking out the fare. People won't give a rat's butt that the ticket is cheaper because they don't know what the cost is, anyway.

I doubt that many other carriers will follow suit...

Me too!

"Take my bag, not my money!" cracks me up every time!

I quit checking bags when mine were mysteriously lost from Heathrow to BVI.....hard lesson learned, but after this one incident I was well ahead of the curve on carry-on bags and have been able to skirt most of their (airlines) issues. If I couldn't upgrade to first, I would request bulkhead - technically last on, especially if I was waiting for my name to be called for the upgrade. All those with seats in the rear use the space above my seat for their bags! ARGH! So, when I boarded, guess what! They tried to tell me I had to check my bags. Me thinks not. It is aggravating when other passengers abuse the rule, but the gate agents allow this behaviour.

So, don't fly Spirit.

Any wonder that the UPS Store has about 8 flyers hung everywhere showing the cost of additional bags. If you plan ahead you can save money and ship UPS ground. They don't go through it and you can insure the bejesus out of it.

Seems like a saw a news story on just that awhile back. Maybe it was when airlines started charging for checked bags, but I seem to remember that for many fliers, depending upon starting and ending points, shipping UPS was cheaper - and virtually guaranteed.
