Thank goodness!

While it is a perfect early Spring Day here in SoWal today, Spring won't really start until 30 days from now when we change the clocks and take back the evenings from winter. Why would anyone want it to be dark at 5PM anyway?????

Just when you start getting used to it, somebody goes and changes it again!.....must've been a woman who came up with the concept. <|:0)

I love it, it's one of the things that makes this area unique. While we get dark at 4 in the afternoon during the winter we get the added benefit of a super sized beach day during the summer.

Daylight Savings 2011: Spring Forward/Fall Back Time Change

Daylight Saving Time or Daylight Savings 2011

Charles Manley, Yahoo! Contributor Network

On Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 2am, spring forward as daylight saving time begins in the United States and Canada.

On Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2am, fall back as daylight saving time ends.

Daylight Saving Time (DST), or daylight savings (as it is commonly referred to), starts on the second Sunday in March at 2am and ends on the first Sunday in November at 2am.

Daylight saving time is frequently remembered using the mnemonic "spring forward, fall back." Just before the spring season, much of the Northern Hemisphere moves their clocks forward one hour. In the fall, clocks are turned back one hour.

Daylight saving time, or daylight savings, was first implemented by the German and Austro-Hungarian Empires during World War I. Daylight saving time was believed to be a way to save coal during the war. The British Empire and much of the rest of Europe quickly followed suit. Russia implemented daylight saving time in 1917, after the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II.

The United States adopted daylight savings in 1918 after becoming heavily involved in World War I. It was implemented as means to save on coal and energy resources.

In 2005, the US Congress passed the Energy Policy Act. The act included provisions to extend daylight saving time by one full month. Proponents claimed the additional four weeks could save as much as 10,000 barrels of oil per day.

Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, America Samoa, and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Close to the equator, the average length of daylight changes little from winter to summer.

In the spring of 2011, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev abolished the practice of daylight saving time throughout the Russian Federation. He cited seasonal change "stress and illnesses" as the reasoning behind abolishing the time change practice.
