I'll have to check more sources, but I believe the answer is a resounding yes. The city of Seattle has done away with the holiday, possibly as a result of this very interesting, informative, and horrifying "Oatmeal" comic which is put out by a native of Seatle. It's tales murder, rape and torture motivated by extreme greed and the desire to hurt people.

History must be judged in it's context. People of the age felt that non-Europeans lives were worthless. While we certainly know better now, to hold history by modern standards is an exercise in futility.

But Columbus Day is a modern invention. As you say, we know better now.

Almost every "civilized" society was built on genocide, violence, slavery, etc. So I agree that trying to analyze holidays is an exercise in futility.

What's important to understand is that human societies are capable of enormous wrong and enormous good. Love rules in the end and good prevails.

Wow! Breaking news: The Seattle City Council is replacing #ColumbusDay with #Indigenous People’s Day. Awesome news :)

I'd further suggest, since your myopic source seemed to celebrate the fact the Lincoln had a day, to use your Google skills to search for: "Lincoln blacks quotes". Then you may wish to rethink that celebration as well.

Washington owned slaves. Although they were emancipated after his death, per his wishes. Further, by today's standards, he was certainly an insurgent fighting the legitimate British government.

Thanksgiving isn't exactly a great reason for remembrance either.

But why stop there.

Christmas? The very thought sends our Atheists and Agnostics into fits.

MLK seems a good idea, but the man had some minor issues. Does he pass the test?

Why not Cesar Chavez? He certainly is worthy.

I'm not judging history. I'm just questioning our modern practice of designating a day in Columbus's honor. The misdeeds of the others pale in comparison, and there is a stark contrast between reality and conventional "knowledge" on this particular subject. I can't for the life of me compare dismemberment for fun and profit to marital infidelity and civil disobedience of MLK, but go ahead and do that if you think it makes you sound intelligent.

No, I was questioning the limits of your correctness. That I took it to it's absurd conclusion is acceptable, in my opinion. You are the same individual who made light of a baby drowning to further your intolerance of Christianity. Don't let the irony be lost on you.

Whether you believe I am intelligent or not is monumentally irrelevant. This is a sub forum of an internet message board where nothing important may ever be settled.

Have a blessed day.

Actually, the Christian religion's foundation lies on the glorification of the horrible death of an innocent. Don't let the irony be lost on you.

I'd be in favor of dumping the Columbus day holiday in favor of John Lennon. His birthday was Ocotber 9. After all the Beatles were bigger than.. um! what's that guy's name again?
