I saw a comment today made by a current sitting school board member that just absolutely floored me and reminded me of just how clueless some people are that we elect to make decisions that effect not only children but the rest of the County as well.
Evidently, this school board member had no clue our "quaint little town" has a homeless population and was "quite surprised" to be approached in downtown Defuniak by a homeless person. I guess it's beneath some folks to visit cold weather shelters in our community or places like Caring and Sharing where the less fortunate go for food, clothing, household items or even shoes for their children who attend Walton County schools. I'm also sure this person has never worked with local Churches putting food boxes together for those in the Community who face food shortage issues on a daily basis and depend on those food boxes to provide for their families.
Someone should also tell this individual that homelessness does not just mean not having a roof over your head. In Walton County alone their are approximately 200 families either living in substandard housing, (no heat/no electricity/plumbing etc.) with other family members or in vehicles and still others who are one paycheck away from living in a tent or on the street.
Come down from your "Ivory Tower" occasionally...you might be surprised about what really goes on in your "quaint little town"!
