Sure does make one think.
The Cost of the Iraq war. Actually, I have alway's wondered why they call it a war. I mean, Hussein is dead. We took care of him. Who are we fighting? Why are we fighting them? I just don't get it. AND, everyday I read the news and more of our Soldiers have been killed. I say bring them home and bring them home now. Oh wait, I forgot El Presidente wants to send MORE troops to Iraq, so I guess they won't be coming home any time soon. Perhaps some of you have a loved one in Iraq fighting in the "war". I would love to hear your perspective on it. Or, some of you who know the "reason" we are there. I don't think it was ever made clear to the American people why we are there. Can anyone tell me?

Freedom of speech and we can all express ourselves as we like. It is unfortunate that this thread contains primarily ignorant liberals that try to be ass-kissing, politically-correct mindless humans. Why don't you guys go into politics, I am sure you could make this a better world for us all. It is embarassing that you people have any affiliation with Florida or any presence in our beloved South.
I am actually very conservative but find the current state of our international affairs appalling. When Bill Clinton lied (whom I can not stand), Republicans wanted him hung. Now that George Bush has lied, it is to "protect our freedoms"! It is a big crock of s#@#! They both should have been impeached!

Ciao,
I am a very conservative person. You're not going to change a liberal's opinions by badgering and name calling. That should be left to them. Just a thought.

you people? as in the community of sowal folks from all over the country who represent a very wide range of views and beliefs? listen, if you can't see that Bush has brought harm to the country and world, then I guess it would be hard for you to participate in any intelligent discussion here. it really isn't even liberal v. conservative at this point.

He has mislead us into a war for the wrong reasons. Why do you think we are in IraQ? We were told it was becausae of "Weapons of Mass destruction" or wait, no it was to get rid of "Saddam", no wait it was, "war on Terror". My bet is he is unsure of why were are there. Why are we in Iraq? Would someone please help me here and explain why they feel we are there. I will listen. Please remember the people of Iraq had nothing to do with 911.

I was under the impression that Congress (both Republicans and Democrats) voted to send us to war based on the intelligence reports about Iraq's weapons and the fact that Iraq would not comply with the UN resolutions. If the intelligence reports had been ignored by the Bush administration and an attack had occured as a result, Bush and his administration would have been held accountable. I guess I just feel to say that he lied and should be impeached when Congress approved it is wrong.
I pray for President Bush and for our troops every day. There is no doubt that this war is a terrible mess and the stakes are incredibly high. The terrorists want nothing more than to kill every one of us and if Iraq is left in a shambles I fear that they will be successful.
Just my 2 cents for whatever that is worth.

A point about the military point of view in itself... The military is designed to make soldiers. It breaks down a person's social mentality in regards to "normal" society and turns men & women into soldiers. That is the point of the military and that is the result. It's simply & blatant socialization. This does not just happen to the soldiers but also the family, including spouses and children. Military life is not life like the rest of us know. Military personnel & their families live, breathe, eat & s*** military values. So, they truly believe what they are saying is to be 100% true. They can't help it or they wouldn't survive. Literally.
I have a great deal of my family in the Army, including the Commanding General of the Third Army, Lt. Gen. Steven Whitcomb. I love him dearly, but I also look at him and go, "D***! He's a killing machine!" And my Aunt Cathy, his wife, is going to have culture shock coming back into the "real world" after so many years of military life after he retires. (This is probably why I turned into a liberal & somewhat of a hippie. Only my late Grandmother & I were liberals in the family. We learned to keep our mouths shut.)
The only reason that I am saying all of this is that each of you is simply doing this
when you are trying to reason with CiaoBella or anyone else who justifies their views from a military point of view.
BTW, there is actually a class at UGA called The Sociology of the Military. It was a very depressing semester.

Interesting post organicmama. I do agree with a lot of what you are saying, though I don't think you can paint everyone in the military with the same brush.
As stated previously hubby is a former Marine officer, and since we met in college and were married shortly after, I went through his four years active and three reserves with him. I don't know what he did all day but I'm sure he was a trained killer. My job meanwhile required me to be an observer and a listener. I never got too rah-rah but I enjoyed my experience as a Marine Corps wife and learned quite a bit. I deeply respect their values and what they as a group have done for our country. I don't know where we would be as a country without the Marines.
However, Marines by definition are hard-core.
is a maniac and I will never be able to keep up with him; only complement him and continue to do my own thing. If I wanted a full perspective on what's going on, I would not ask a Marine, probably not even the Commandant of the Marine Corps. They are not exactly trained diplomacists
and what seems to be called for is much more diplomacy and a lot of finesse.Interestingly, the reservists keep calling to see if they can get hubby to come back. They even offered a five-figure bonus! But no way would he take it. I feel sorry for those going on three or more tours over there. They are doing way more than their fair share.
And for what?needs to get out more

Let me first say that I am married to a former Marine Corp officer who has served in war. This thread is very disappointing and narrow-minded. First, you really don't want us to pull out of Iraq at this time. Iran is drooling waiting for that to happen. Iran is out of control and if they gain control in Iraq we will battle there once again in a worse battle. Second, if you will research your stats, our President pulled over 20,000 troops out in the past year. At worst this means that we are discussing the "same 20,000" not an ADDITIONAL 20,000. Also, talk to our service members who have actually been there, most Iraqi people are grateful we are there. Do you really believe that if we pull out now the people in Iraq will successfully establish a democracy on their own with vultures circling them? Not to mention that the country would be a hot bed for more terrorists. The world is just not about you, I know that shocks you but its true. This is the best country on Earth and if you just want to shoot your mouth off with inaccurate information then get the hell out. You have it made here and you certainly have done nothing to deserve that! Some wonderful soldiers before you gladly gave their lives so you can all ***** and moan about decisions made. Yes, mistakes have been made but Democrats made them just as Republicans did. I hope none of you vote again before you try harder to collect accurate facts. You are a total idiot if you want Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Obama the muslim etc in charge of your life. Wake up sheeple!
Let me first say that ChowHeadBella is married to a former Marine Corp officer who has served in war. This thread is very disappointing and narrow-minded to her and oh so reminiscent of the good ole Dick Nixon, "Stand By Me" days. Let me so display!
First, you really don't want us to pull out of Vietnam at this time. Russia is drooling waiting for that to happen. China is out of control and if they gain control in Vietnam we will battle there once again in a worse battle. Second, if you will research your stats, our President pulled over 20,000 troops out in the past year (replacing them with "consultants"). At worst this means that we are discussing the "same 20,000" not an ADDITIONAL 20,000, see how math works in war? Also, talk to our service members who have actually been there, most Vietnamese people are grateful we are there. Do you really believe that if we pull out now the people in Vietnam will successfully establish a democracy on their own with vultures circling them? Not to mention that the country would be a hot bed for more terrorists. Some wonderful soldiers before you gladly gave their lives so you can all ***** and moan about decisions made. Yes, mistakes have been made but Democrats made them just as Republicans did. Just b/c they shot the Kennedys to get to LBJ who had promised to escalate the Vietnam War, its the Demos fault they didn't successfully recruit Nixon either. (1) Bush ignored CIA reports that they could find no WMD. Completely ignored them and remember, his Daddy ran he CIA.........
(2) then he knowingly lied to the entire World that this "invasion" was about 9/11 and WMC. Neither was the case, not one instance can now be found that Iraq or Saddam had one damn thing to do with 9/11.
(3) Whether Iraq is left inshambles or not, terrorrists want to kill everyone of us.
(4) Dick Nixon was guilty.

Yes both parties in Congress were presented the evidence gathered by Bush, then voted to give Bush what he asked for. He asked for a threat to go to war. The vote wasn't for a declaration of war, but was to give Bush the ability to threaten Iraq into compliance. He stated he wanted "teeth" in his warning to Saddam in regards to UN resolutions being carried out. He said we needed to show a strong united front to get him to comply. Congress was told it was the threat of force being approved by them that would keep us safe.
He promised force wasn't the first option, but the very last one and that he would exhaust all means before he took Americans to war. UN inspecters were on the ground in Iraq. Saddam was contained and no new threat against us had occured when Bush took his power, given by Congress as a threat, into actual force.
Make no mistake, Saddam was nasty evil. But if he had the WMD ready that Bush told us we were in immediate danger of, why didn't he use them on us when we invaded? Using that same logic Bush used, we should have already invaded Korea and Iran because they actually do have the ability that Saddam did not
Now everyone has a new playing field. All manner of terrorist groups can now freely move in and around Irag. This was not possible before we removed Saddam, he didn't mind them hating us, but he was in charge. These people can kill our young people in one location and not have to burden themselves with stealing our planes and going far from home. Now I just realized I'm not in the right place to post this. I appear lost. See we all have this directional thing and get turned around. March 2003-should we stay on Osama bin Laden in Afganistan or invade Irag
