OK, all you decorators out there, I have a project for you. We live in a 1930's house and have a kitchen with details typical of that era, i.e. interesting color tile covering nearly 2/3 of the wall. The funky green tile is staying (there are two shades), white woodwork will stay, wallpaper has been stripped, it's time to paint. We are not faint-hearted painters; the walls in our house are very colorful, and the kitchen will be no exception. I've been trying to choose a color scheme and came up with two ideas. Have a look or offer a new option!

Please post some pictures, I can sympathize with you.....I got so sick of walking around on plywood and it was super cold too!

Well here's one - it is a mess - please note the lovely beaded valances with palm trees - they are staying (well after a good wash, anyway!)

Ah - so it is bad isn't it? The people who owned my house way back when were wallpaper happy. Apparently there is something called "sizing" that you are supposed to put on the walls before you wallpaper so the wallpaper will come off easily years down the line. Apparently, the people who owned my house before me never heard of doing this. So every time I decide to take down wallpaper, I end up needing major drywall repair. In the pic, only the section around the window has been removed. The wallpaper that remains is a thick vinyl - I'm guessing they put it up to cover all the flaws in the wall. There are some good size cracks. Anyway, since I am doing the room in a tropical theme, I figured I could go with a heavily textured paper (maybe a faux grasscloth) and forego the drywall repair. I can wallpaper myself, but would have to hire a professional for the drywall.

easy solution to this problem....I've spent years removing wallpaper, my last house had wallpaper on the kitchen ceiling!!
Texture paint. They have it at Lowes or Homedepot. It is almost the consistancy of drywall mud, and you use a drywall tool to put it on. Makes it a little stucko-looking, then you can paint over it any color you want. I even put my kid's handprint in our old sunroom. No one would ever know it was there but me, but I just loved it!!

Sounds easier than the alternative.

Now tell us about the psycho that wallpapers the kitchen ceiling:eek:

It was not as bad as it sounds, just a lot of work and very dated. It was mossy green and beige check which was also under the chair rail and strawberries inbetween...oh, and the cabinets where also that green:eek:

lots of work!! The sunroom had confederate soldiers on it:eek:  That room I didn't even strip, just textured right over those bad boys!!

Beachmom, I LOVE it - much less complicated than wallpapering! And I could get the kids to help me. Thanks so much for the idea! As you know, I am not a particularly artsy type, but I did, in fact, sponge paint my kids room before Kaylee was born. The background is yellow, and I sponged baby blue and seafoam green and it turned out really nice - despite my limited abilities. Sounds like the texture paint would also be something even I could do.

Once this bedroom is finished, we'll need to start on the bathrooms. All have metallic wallpaper, but the powder room was done from floor to ceiling - it's a lovely large paisley print in earth tones reminiscent of the 1970's - orange, brown, etc. They even wallpapered the back of the door. If it weren't for the door handle, you might not be able to figure out how to get out of the room. Not a good place to end up when you've had too much to drink - trust me on this.

Mylar wallpaper and even on the doors:eek: Take the lightbulbs out of the room until you can get to them.

No artsy abilities needed on this one, and I think it would look grayt in that room. Call me if you need, I've talked another friend through it over the phone:biggrin:

Definitly get the kid's envolved, let them write their names by their hand print, it's really not as obvious as it sounds. It was our little secret:cool:

Metallic......

One other thing that is cool to do is to do a glaze over the texture paint. Once again, very easy!!

Another option, in addition to the textured paint, beaded board, etc would be to consider wall tile part of the way up. I haven't done tile yet but I hear it's not too hard to do. Crossville has some pretty cool tile and they have some that look like beaded board. You could go half way up and put a contrasting tile for a "chair rail"; then do the textured paint on the top half. For the electrical outlets I read there are "extenders" when you are adding tile or paneling.

I like this board ..... one of my most favorite things to do on the Abaco Board is to plan newbies vacation schedule. Now I get to help you plan your "remodeling" tasks. What fun:clap_1:

I'm coming to you guys when I am ready to paint the three bedrooms after the hardwood floor is in. This is day three of "pounding". I think they are going to finish today:bang:

Update: Long story short, the brown won. I got pics, RO. They came out really dark, and my photo editing didn't help much, so I'm hoping you can get the general idea and see the true color in some of the shots.

The brown is very striking against the white, and the green softens it perfectly. Grayt job. It looks wonderful.

 Great job!

Love this thread. It has brought back fond memories of a home we had in Wilmington, DE (similar in age). We had those exact tiles and color in kitchen and the baths were those tiles just a different colors.

Our kitchen cabinets were original white metal. We loved them! Of course the RE appraisers came through and knocked the appraisal down some because of metal cabinets, etc. They were in near perfect condition and fit the house quite well.

Glad to see you keep the tile and work with it so beautifully!
