UUUHHHHH.....NO.....mine was cheap...I wore my SIL's dress, got married in an unairconditioned church (Aug. 12th...the hottest day of the year!) and the reception was at my parents house

my whole entire wedding including the reception and my dress may have cost $2000 but i seriously doubt it was that much....

Speaking of weddings, did any of you catch the new show on Fox, the one after American Idol? Wedding Bells. It was so funny.
There was an article on page 2 of today's paper about how marriage is now the domain of rich people. Poor people don't do it anymore, evidently. I kid you not.

My whole wedding, including dress, reception, flowers, etc. was about $6000 back in 1992. If I'm lucky the divorce will come in about a grand cheaper.

I saw just a few minutes of it. Had Tivo'd AI, so watched that instead. It looks good. Will have to watch next week. You might have to fill me in on what I missed.

If you think the average cost of weddings is high, you certainly don't want to get a divorce, because the cost of divorce will make that $27,000 wedding cost look like chump change.

I just remember my wedding dress costing like $400.00 in 1977.

if more people realized how expensive it is to divorce, maybe they wouldn't get married so frivolously....

divorce is only expensive if there is a battle (which threre usually is) but in my case there was no contest...so it was reasonable (for a divorce) I didn't have to pay a dime....thank goodness!

i don't think i would ever get divorced....i would got straight for murder.....

Now my ex-wife might disagree with my statement, becasue it didn't cost her a dime.

one of the guys at work just got divorced, and it cost him like 60k to get rid of his crazy wife... she was a nut and an idjit so it was worth every penny to do it, but man...that's a chunk of change....
i told him not to marry her, she was my sis' old college roommate, and i knew she was a nut, but he didn't listen. he said he will next time....

I agree that $27,000 is a lot for a wedding but when you compare that amount to what some pay for an SUV, like $50k or even $75k, it just dosen't seem like that much after all. Inflation is so hard for Mr. JR and me to comprehend sometimes.

i think what gets me about the whole thing is that a person who spends $30,000 on a wedding is just as married as a person who spends $300. i guess i am just cheap.

Divorce was only expensive for my ex :clap_1:
Weddings... my friend spent over $30,000 for her daughters reception alone. Her dress was $5000 and that's just what we know. I'd estimate the total amount after flowers, music, video, pictures etc to be well over $50,000.
She has it, so that's her call, but OUCH!
For Bethies, I opened a joint checking account in our names so we could both write the checks and she could see where her money was going. I can't tell you enough how this helped. Giving her a blank check or having her come back for money as she needed it would have hurt more.
When that money was gone it was gone, so she needed to make smart choices on how she spent it while we planned. I suggested:
1. She have a small wedding and use the money on a house or honeymoon
2. She could have a nice wedding with the amount I gave her or,
3. She could have a huge blow out wedding by adding her money to it.
She watched every penny, never asked for more, was grateful for all of it and we had a wonderful day. It wasn't the wedding itself, but the reception that cost us. We did have great food, and an open bar, and that really was what escalated the price, because she shopped smart for her invitations, dress,
photographer, florist, video guy, etc - total $15,000-$18,000. It truly was as nice as any wedding she'd been in with her friends and we didn't spend but half what they'd spent. But still a far cry from the $1500-$2000 I spent in 1978. I know people who go into debt, refinance their home etc for their daughters big day. I think that's crazy, but hey it's just one womans opinion.

It helps when they see the money disappearing from the account and have to decide what they want most..an open bar, a sit down meal or an over the top dress. We kept the guest list limited too. If you need to invite everyone you ever knew, and their dog, it's gonna hurt.
