oof--I just know that almost 10 months after tying the knot, it's nice to have the day paid off. With a chunk from mom and dad and adding to it a little on our own, we did what we went there to do--got married!

The day was good and in hindsight, there are a few things that I might have done differently, but I realize now more than ever it's the days after the wedding day that truly matter. Some photographs and a few songs that make me smile are good to have as memories, but it is about what we are doing now

My youngest son is getting married in June of 2008. They will be married in the church though this is her second marriage. We found a very nice hall and the per plate cost is $27.00 including booze. With everything else involved they are looking at around $11,000.00. We will help them with the cost but they are paying for most of it themselves. That is the way they want it so who am I to argue?

That sounds very nice. Enjoy the big day.

:D and worth every penny huh ?

Oh yes, definitely.

We learned a valuable lesson from a couple down the street; they shelled out $40K a piece and battled it out, then ultimately decided to reconcile.

Ain't it, though? While they were battling it out, we paid for our kids college tuition plans.

I feel like people are getting married later...like in their late 20's/early 30's. And in turn, you are making more money. So why not blow the top off your wedding.

And in the great words of Gfunn..."Wedding? You've already spent that money."

I'm working on the honeymoon now.:clap_1:

It should be a very fun day. We really don't need the big blown out affair to have a grayt time. Sometimes the big blown out affairs just don't turn out the way they are supposed to.

I agree with you Audie, there's no difference in the committment whether you spend $30,000 or $300. I got married in a $75.00 dress from a thrift store and my husband wore a borrowed suit. We invited a few friends and family to the donated church facility and cooked out in the back yard for the "reception". We had a blast, and it wasn't a shotgun wedding either...I wasn't even pregnant! It's really the promise to God that matters.

i got a $1200 dress for $175 on a close-out rack for my wedding.

kimmi i see your point about getting married later etc. i guess there are just more important things i would rather spend my money on. we opted for a 2 week honeymoon instead of spending money on the wedding. and we paid for everything ourselves except pop paid for the reception. it's a whole different ballgame when you are paying for all that piddly crap with your own money - i like spending my parents' money better !

DANG, I say,.,.,.SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED GREEN BACKS AND ELOPE !!!!!

I totally agree. even though we had the big italian wedding. it was important to my mother, and she handled it all. it was really a special day. but if I could do it all over, I would either elope (how easy can you get?) or have a very small family affair. I do feel guilty about the expense to my parents, especially because they were so generous and wonderful and would never let us know the cost to them.

as someone said above, it's not the wedding that matters. it's the days that follow.

She watched every penny, never asked for more, was grateful for all of it and we had a wonderful day. It wasn't the wedding itself, but the reception that cost us. We did have great food, and an open bar, and that really was what escalated the price, because she shopped smart for her invitations, dress,
photographer, florist, video guy, etc - total $15,000-$18,000. It truly was as nice as any wedding she'd been in with her friends and we didn't spend but half what they'd spent. But still a far cry from the $1500-$2000 I spent in 1978. I know people who go into debt, refinance their home etc for their daughters big day. I think that's crazy, but hey it's just one womans opinion.
I remember the pictures....

UUUHHHHH.....NO.....mine was cheap...I wore my SIL's dress, got married in an unairconditioned church (Aug. 12th...the hottest day of the year!) and the reception was at my parents house
There must be something funky about that date....:funn:

You do know why they say divorce is so expensive!

I agree with all the comments, a wedding doesn't have to be crazy expensive. When I started figuring all the costs out, I thought, I am in the wrong business.... but then I got a divorce and figured out where the real money wuz....

to me having a big wedding is like having a big huge expensive house, i just don't care...there are more important things to me... that's why i live in a cracker box that is almost paid for...

my sis on the other hand always dreamed of a big exstravaganza and that's what she had.....mom and pop are probably still paying for it...
that's why i'm their favorite :rolling:

if i can't have that then there really is no reason to get married

I know...I feel like I'd want a fancy dress. And some fancy jewelry. And an insane bar and band. And crazy flowers. And an insane honey moon.

I have to marry rich.
