OKAY- the "Television is Killing Us" thread made me think about my summer reading list....what is on yours? Amazon.com is a dangerous place for me.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (author of The Kite Runner, oneof my favorite books)

God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens. Now THIS should be interesting!

The Assault on Reason by Al Gore. Let's see what Big Al has to offer.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling. Duh! Can't wait!

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence by Amy Sedaris. Sounds hauntingly familiar.

And I went to 2 bookstores to find Farenheit 451; no one had it. They acted as if they'd never heard of it. I remember it being pretty basic. :idontno:

Wow! I remember my son burning that book after he finished it. Poetic, no?

Will just finished Catcher in the Rye and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Gatsby is a great choice- especially since Louisville has a place in it.

I have "The Secret" and "A Year In The World" on my reading list, and a few nonsensical books "Savannah's Garden" and "A Salty Piece Of Land"

Make sure you also read "Tales from Magaritaville" before you do Salty Piece of Land. It has the true start of the book in it.

mangy - I call this book when you are done. looks like my kind of reading.

paula recommended Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz a while back. I am not a koontz reader, but I gave it a try (cause paula's recommendations are always right on) and really liked it. very good story.

Bless Your Heart, Tramp and other Southern Endearments - given to me by a dear wench, is on my reading list for this summer. looks like a great beach book!

Did you laught out loud at some of the parts in Life Expectancy? (it could have been that I was just feeling kind of punchy anyway). I thought it was pretty outrageous from the first few pages until the very end (and not a long book). I rarely read mysteries/thrillers. Not a deep book at all but a funn book.

I am reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards. It is very good and takes place in Lexington, Kentucky.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (author of The Kite Runner, oneof my favorite books)

Please provide a report when you are finished with this. I loved the Kite Runner!

.

Life Expectancy by Dean Koonz - I read this book last summer and thought it was hysterical. A good mystery and a fun read -- I laughed out loud a few times.

The Tender Bar (recommended on SoWal.com in the past)

I really enjoyed both of these! J.R. Moehringer needs to write another book. Hasn't it been a while since the Tender bar?

I am almost done with "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult. Beautiful writing but a heartbreaking topic.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I'm about 1/3 of the way through this one! I love it! (although, I'm not absolutely crazy about Julia..... I'd like to see someone like Jenna Fischer in this part.)
OH...I agree about Julia...but I am glad the movie is being made...who knows Julia may do a decent job.... I hope she does not ruin the message.

Make sure you also read "Tales from Magaritaville" before you do Salty Piece of Land. It has the true start of the book in it.
Thanks bbb!:D

Celia Rivenbark is one of the funniest writers/columnists ever. Her newest book is Stop Dressing Your Six-Year Old Like a Skank. Great Southern humor.

I am determined to read all of the Anne Rivers Siddons books this summer that I have missed. I just finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter and enjoyed it. Also for just all out light reading, the Shopoholic books by Sophie Kinsella are good.

CNN has been playing clips from a spelling bee today, where the "favorite" was eliminated. Which brings me to my point- we should have a SoWal Spelling Bee at the next gathering of more than 15 or so SoWallers. It would probably be spell to the death.

I'm rereading the first 6 Harry Potter Books. I had forgotten just how good the first three were...starting 4 tomorrow.
I've got a stack of Sweet Potato Queen books, never been opened I gotta get to. And Chuck Palanuik (sp?) has a new one coming out. Loved Fight Club, Invisible Monsters(favorite) and Choke.
