SPECIAL TROPICAL DISTURBANCE STATEMENT
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
1150 AM EDT THU MAY 31 2007

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA...
SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO AND ADJACENT LAND AREAS ARE ASSOCIATED
WITH A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE CENTERED ABOUT 75 MILES SOUTHEAST
OF COZUMEL MEXICO. ALTHOUGH THIS SYSTEM HAS SOME POTENTIAL FOR
TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT DAY OR SO...THE LOW IS EXPECTED
TO MOVE SLOWLY NORTHWARD INTO THE SOUTHERN GULF OF MEXICO WHERE
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WOULD LIKELY FAVOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT AS
A NON-TROPICAL LOW. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT...THIS SYSTEM SHOULD
BRING HEAVY RAINS ACROSS WESTERN CUBA AND SOUTHERN FLORIDA OVER THE
NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. PLEASE MONITOR PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL
WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE FOR MORE DETAILS.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS SYSTEM CAN BE FOUND IN HIGH SEAS
FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE... UNDER AWIPS
HEADER NFDHSFAT1 AND WMO HEADER FZNT01 KWBC.

People think I'm nutz...but i've told anyone who'll listen, there will not be a major hurricane to hit the gulf for 10+ years. These storms come in cycles and the last 4 yrs (excluding last year which was quiet) were the peak. you can take that to the bank and invest in property insurers who have heavy exposure to FL's huge premiums.
...and what scientific knowledge can you show to prove this? Whether it is the guru of hurricanes, Dr Masters, or you, telling us the number of major Hurricanes to enter the Gulf this year, I wouldn't place a bet for either way.

 I like your optimism, but what do you consider a 'major' hurricane? The media will make certain that a category I storm is hyped to the point of seeming like a city killer. My rule of thumb is category III or worse, move out of the way, category II or less, I'm parking the car in an elevated garage and chilling out at home.

It would be wonderful if you're correct, but I prefer to err on the side of caution! Are you only considering it major if it's a 5?

What insurers do you recommend, most I know are dumping homeowners and bailing out!

A few pointers from the battlefront-Empty your refrigerator before you leave or else you could return home to a putrid, horrific mess and need a new appliance! Also, get a wallet sized card from your doctor that lists all your medical conditions and the name, DOSE and FREQUENCY of your medicine. Believe it or not, many people have a hard time telling you what meds they are taking beyond "a little yellow one for blood pressure and a blue one for my nerves"...😱

amen to that one skunky

"well it's white and it starts with an s and i'm not really sure what it's for" :bang:

Except for the elevated garage part, that is kind of my thought too, but it is possible to commit to staying when it is cat 2, then the bridges are closed, and suddenly it picks up steam and changes rapidly. We've seen that change in intensity in other storms, so I'm not sure that I buy into my own philosophy of decision making when it comes to storms.

If they are predicting 2 or higher, I skedaddle! I figure it's better to have myself an evacucation and visit some relatives than potentially be stuck or get myself in a bad situation that I don't have the resources for.

A couple of suggestions I'd add -- first, empty your fridge, unplug it, and leave the doors open. The contents will liquify, leak, eat through your flooring, and scent everything in your house -- ruining every dry clean only rug, piece of upholstered furniture, bedding, drapery, and clothing you own. I couple of frozen steaks aren't worth it. Encourage your neighbors to do the same, the smell will travel that far. I still smell that smell when I think of those days.

Leave the door of your washing machine open so it doesn't mildew, and if you have a fabric softener compartment flush it with bleach. Did you know flies like to eat fabric softener and even find it a great place to raise baby maggots? I bet you didn't!

Cover all your drains. Nasty things will fly up and/or crawl out of your drains when the water evaporates out of the P traps.

Ask anyone you think may not have the means to evacuate to come with you. Offer to put them up with you. If they are super proud or stubborn, act like you want them to babysit for you or something. It may sound like a lot to take on, but nothing feels worse than imagining the suffering of someone you could have helped when the worst happens.
