my question is....now that it is public knowledge...(in the Walton Sun)...with pictures...is it negligence if this behemoth reptile eats someone?:idontno: I live near this lake and a neighbor said they called someone (either animal control or an environmental agency)...sorry i don't know which...and they "suggested euthanasia" What is that supposed to mean?!? This snake is estimated to be a Boa or a Python that is 12 to 15 feet long. So anyone who is feeling adventurous and has a canoe and a machete...call me....
Seriously...what do I do?!?

"Public knowledge?" Does this mean that it's really really truly there? (send me the Walton Sun link if you got it!)
As for euthanasia , it means that Dr. Kavorkian (or however the heck you spell it) just got out of prison, and you're supposed to ask him to bring his minivan to Oyster Lake and tell the snake that he has nothing left to live for. The snake will then sign a waiver saying that he agrees to terminate his life of his own free will...
Or maybe that's just for people. Animal euthanasia means that you load the beast up in your car and take it to the vet.
As for the "seriously" part, I suggest calling a zoo or exotic pet store--someone who has a genuine interest in him. Animal control sees him as a nuisance; look for someone who sees him as a giant (literally) asset. Get the media involved. Call freakin' Animal Planet!
(And keep the boy and Elbie inside!)

Hop, here's what you do. I've seen it on tv. You get you a team of strong people to help you out. Grease up one leg and dangle it in the water. Have the other team members be on standby, ready to help pull you and the snake out of the water. When the snake sees your leg, he will think, "ah, food." (warning -- this next part will hurt a bit, because those snakes have some viscious teeth.) The snake goes for the foot, and begins swallowing his way up your entire leg. This is when the team pulls you and the snake out of the water. Next, comes the part where they need to straighten out the snake and cover him like the Crocodile Hunter used to do. You will need some of the team members to now help pull you out of the snakes mouth. (notice that using this method, the snake cannot swallow you whole because he gets stuck at your waist. You might want to wear a cup. ;-)) Once the team pulls you from the snake's mouth, you have captured yourself the snake. You might want to have some sort of securable container, I'm thinking a dumpster, which you can put the snake in for transport to the zoo.
Any questions? :idontno: I hope I didn't leave out any steps.

I'm really gullible...are you SERIOUS??
If so...that snake needs therapy for a major eating disorder :funn:.

I care, I care! (I always care..I'm kind of boring that way.)
I did some research last night. (And watched a video of a reticulated python eating a sprinkbok, horns and all, so don't try Joe's method!) Called the Wiseharts (they said to tell you hello), who also recommended bugging any sort of exotic pet keepers.
There are a TON of nuisance animal removal services in Orlando, but the only one I saw that wasn't specific to Central Florida was at www.snakegetters.com. (Contact them at http://www.snakegetters.com/email.html)
If you want to try Joe's method, I suggest catching one of the local rabbits instead...

(Yay--glad you made it safe and sound!)
Maybe you could introduce your creature to Hop's creature, and they could either fight it out or make a Japanese movie (or both.)

i'm not losing any sleep over this thing...i know pythons are generally passive and avoid human contact...but they are opportunistic predators and if "nessie" found a friend (unlikely but possible, as it is happening in the everglades) they usually have "litters" from 30 to 100 babies.

OK, we go snake hunting (hopefully) in 2 weeks, if you haven't 'got him' by then.

Or maybe the boy just needs a new pet:
YouTube - Nice pet
(The first version I found of this video had narration saying that this "pet" appeared on the doorstep a few months before the six-year-old boy was born. The family kept it as a good luck charm, and the boy refers to it as a sister. But that version had a doctored ending where the boy ends up as lunch...)

Dr. Wisehart offered a practical solution at church this morning, no tequila required:
Drive rebar into the ground, creating a pen. The bars should be far enough apart for an empty snake to crawl through, but close enough together to keep a chicken inside.
Insert chicken. (I assume he meant a live chicken.)
After the snake eats the chicken, he can't leave the enclosure. Call authorities.
(If your next thread is entitled "Anybody know where to get a live chicken?" I won't have anything to say...)
