my question is....now that it is public knowledge...(in the Walton Sun)...with pictures...is it negligence if this behemoth reptile eats someone?:idontno: I live near this lake and a neighbor said they called someone (either animal control or an environmental agency)...sorry i don't know which...and they "suggested euthanasia" What is that supposed to mean?!? This snake is estimated to be a Boa or a Python that is 12 to 15 feet long. So anyone who is feeling adventurous and has a canoe and a machete...call me....
Seriously...what do I do?!?

Can a Python survive our winters here? I would think it is too cold for a tropical snake.

If so -maybe you should just wait until January and go out and hunt for the half frozen snake-sicle while he's too cold and sluggish to hurt anyone.

Good thinking. You don't want to do it while the lake temps are close to 90F degrees, which they are currently.

I still say that you guys should let the river otter live.

What are the allowable sizes for wildlife around here? I've had the poo scared out of me by an 8-9' snake in Eastern Lake. Is that ok?

Unless it's a menace, leave it alone - maybe it will help w/ the feral cat problem and people letting their kids/pets roam too freely!

I'm not sure what your question means.

Was that snake within the acceptable sizes for local wildlife or do we need to intervene there too?

There is no limit on size where the gov't steps in and kills an animal for getting too large. Gator relocation typically occurs only when there it is a nuisance gator. As for snakes, probably the longest snake we have, naturally occuring in this area is the Indigo Snake, which grow to lengths around 7 ft. I had one living in my yard last year and it was a good 6 ft in length. They do like the water, but they are not venomous and couldn't do much damage to most cats and dogs, much less people. If someone had released their pet Python into the wild, which does happen, it would most likely be a nuisance and a potential threat to animals which it encountered. Some of the Pythons can grow large enough to eat adult humans. They are an exotic species, and would likely be considered invasive and a nuisance at any size.

See graphic for possible explanation for the all giant snakes, gators, etc ;-)

Explanation #2, all the medication that gets flushed down the toilet into the water.

It's the opinion of all my armchair herpetologist friends that your creature is too big and aquatic to be a burmese. We think it's a reticulated python.

Go ahead. Google it and YouTube it. It'll scare you half to death. (My favorite quote from my surfing: "There are two types of animals--snakes and snake food."😱)

Hey, it looks like some local guys finally caught the serpent but they had to make the snake cough of the baby hippo before being able to lift the snake onto the truck. [ame="http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6527966434248029824"]See video here[/ame]. :yikes:
