why are kids AND parents (emphasis on parents) peddling at the corner of 30A and Defuniak for money for a trip. Not even kids from this county, begging for handouts from everyone. the kids from South Walton that I know and sponsor in boosters work for money and these kids parents are very pushy about passerbys "GIVING" money to them for a trip and I don't even know where they are from. When I asked, they walked to the next car. WTF!!! Have a car wash already or do something besides peddle your daughters on the corner for dollar bills

And I mean a REAL national championship - first winning in your area, then regionals, sectionals, at the state level - the stuff of olympic hopefuls and college athletic scholarships, not "the national championship of middle school soccer players from a town ending in ville with a lefthanded goalie"!
This stuff has baffled me for years. How many "national championships" are there for each sport? It appears that many have become some sort of "paid" competitions. Thee should be a law against public schools sending their kids to these sorts of "championships". It is ridiculous enough for competitive sports teams that send 10 year olds on a 1 week trip to play baseball, soccer, etc., but parents made a choice to put their kids on traveling comp teams and pay for it. I hope the Niceville team is going to a real softball championship.
And then the cheerleading and dance- every school's team seems to be a "national champion".

Yay, the champions of champions

...and everyone, winners and losers get a trophy!!!!
Question...how many of you would allow your child to stand on a street corner asking for money for a sports trip...or anything for that matter (unless it was Mermy's tax bill?)
Me...a big NO! :nono1:
beachmouse...sometimes you just have to do this in the privacy of your own home.

Aw, Miss Kitty, I love the way you look out for me! I might just make a few bucks panhandling the tourists for property tax relief. I mean, who's not sympathetic about being squeezed like a turnip by the taxman.
But then doncha think the corner would get crowded in no time flat by all our fellow SoWal property owners? We all could use some alms to pay for our insurance bills, too! I think we could all stand in the middle of the road with our buckets out and hopeful looks on our faces..."Help Me Pay My Premium Please"

they do this same there here in indiana - they pick the busiest intersections in town, most of which are dangerous enough without people in them, and kids beg from people while sitting at the stoplights. i always roll my windows up and lock my doors.
people at work are always bringing crap in that their kids are selling, and it usually is crap. i would rather just give a donation that buy that crappy chocolate, or pizzas, or candles, etc. i feel like i give more than enough in taxes.

I think these National Championships are heavily pushed by the Tourist Development Council of different towns. Look at Panama City Beach building the huge baseball park to draw in the championships. While the players and families are in town, they will do a bunch of shopping, fill condo rental units, and go to the beach. "Let's just make this our vacation this year." (and the TDC hopes they keep coming back, year after year, even if they are no longer playing ball.) The coaches and players get hooked, while ma and pa often struggle to pay the additional costs.

yeah, and code enforcement doesn't work on weekends, and all the cops were busy with the unbelieveable traffic coming into the area.Theoretically, code enforcement is on call on the weekends and they do a rotation and there is supposed to be one officer on duty each weekend day.
needs to get out more
whatever the reasoning, it was begging for money, panhandling, and causing a traffic hazard. if one of those kids had been hurt, you can be sure the parents would be suing the driver(it's the american way). in reality, the parents could been charged with contributory negligence.

We were turning to go down to the Red Bar and saw these kids out in the street. I was amazed that they had the kids standing in the middle of the intersection like that. When my kids played sports and we had to fundraise, we never did anything that would jeopardize the kids safety and I feel that the parents or coaches yesterday definitly put safety first for the girls or the people who were driving cars....
They should have set up a car wash in front of the Red Bar, they would have made a ton of money!!
Or maybe they could sell popsicles on the beach!
Or sell cookie dough
Or sell trashbags
Or sell candles

But when you've gone to the same businesses who are also underwriting the science fair kids, the band geeks, the soccer team boosters, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and elementary school programs, there is a point where donor fatigue sets in, and I can't blame a group for trying an area that doesn't really seem to do much for fundraising for its youth.
Go Eagles!
Just wondering why the science fair has "kids", the soccer team has "boosters", but the band has "geeks"
I guess we all take offense to something.....I don't like labeling kids based on their interests (and no, my kids are not in the band.....but if they decide to go that route in the future I hope you don't call them geeks

good point gb - i'm a geek (and a nerd) but was never in the band.
Darlene is my middle name, not my nickname
My son is in the band....and he plays basketball, football, baseball and soccer. He is definetly not a geek.

I see a geek as someone who has an intense interest in one or more academic areas. I'm not sure how that's supposed to be a negative or derogatory thing.

So I had to look up the definition of "Geek". Interesting.
A geek is an individual who is fascinated by [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge"]knowledge[/ame] and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagination"]imagination[/ame], usually electronic or virtual in nature. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word geek as "1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat or snake 2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked 3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity,"
