Question for one of the Architects/Designers

I'm trying to figure out if a table will fit in our oddly shaped dining room (9x19). How much space are you supposed to allow for chairs to be moved around? Is there a quick rule of thumb?

What, me standing under the light fixture with my arms out wasn't precise enough for you?:floor:

Please be generous with the chair space so we can push out from the table a bit after eating Rapunzel's yummy food.;-)

I'm no architect, but allowing 3.0-3.5ft around the each side of the table is about the minimum for comfort.

Duh, you just eat a huge meal, push the chair back and if you hit the wall and still can't stand up, it's too close.

Thanks so much, BR. Now, the search is on for a 3' wide table that will seat more than four.

Good Luck with that!:rolling: :rolling:

PS Nice photo!

You could build one, 3'x13' :funn: , but watch out for the bumping knees.

You're welcome. In our kitchen we have an antique table that was originally built as a work table. It's 3x5, and we've had many dinner parties where we've sat six at it. No, it's not for sale ... well, most things are for sale for the right price.;-)

Have you ever thought of building a table? Big D built a heart pine dining table for our dining room at the beach. He copied it from one I'd seen that was too expensive, and he made it the exact size that we needed for the room. He also did a faux black cherry finish on it. It took him two weekends to make it.

Give yourself 36 inches from the edge of the dining table to the wall for easy access in and out of the chair.

SJ, you are so smart.

Thanks! He enjoys making furniture -- it's therapeutic for him. And I love the table and other furniture he's made.

Oh, and there's no knee-bumping problems with a three-foot wide table. We sit across from each other (in the 3' direction), he's 6'8", I'm 5'10", and we've never bumped knees ... at the table, that is.:floor:

I'm not very helpful, but next time I'm in town I'll bring my folding tv tray in case I get invited and this isn't finished. Good luck skunky. Hey I can eat standing up too, no biggie.

Is the dining room a "room" or just an area?

3'-0" is a minimum - seems like a lot of room until you push away from the table after a meal and try to maneuver out of your seat. Assuming your chair is 14-20" deep that leaves you 16-22" to work with when your chair is flush w/ the wall (and probably scraping it).

We are going to bring our own tape measure to the next meal, and measure for accuracy.

You are the best gullfriend. Measure before the meal, because after the wine, things can get confusing with the tape measure.

You have it, IBD! TV trays! Skunky and Punzy can rig them all together just like tents on the beach. And they wouldn't even have to break them down at dusk.

I think the table could then be used at the beach as a raft. (Like the one the professor and skipper made on Gilligans Island)

I am beginning to think y'all might want to fashion a table out of saw horses and a door or something. Then invest in a cool quilt or covering for the cloth/cover. Of course, this all depends on how long you plan on staying where you are. Chances are that skinny table will not work in a "normal" dining space. We had a skinny butcher block table from Storehouse years ago in our first home. Once we moved, it became a desk once we were able to afford a proper table.

Being from Louisiana, maybe you should go with the crawfish boil style table with sawhorses, plywood and a big whole in the middle for the trash

We started out with a skinny Storehouse table that became a desk, too!

How about one that is connected to the ceiling with power lifts that raise and lower it for people to sit down and stand up?

Plus makes it easy to clean under, you know: shrimp hulls, cracker crumbs, beer bottles and all that.

Too, then you can use the DR for a dance hall after dinner.

Gee!! I am so smart!!!:floor: :floor: :floor:
