I spent all of Monday on Cumberland Island. Note that the spiders in the photos literally spanned nearly a foot in length and appear to have skulls! Imagine running into that while walking in your yard at night.

I will need to adjust the bit size to post the rest, particularly of the horses, but here are a few more...

Better to run across a banana spider than a banana hammock

I did see that and a bit more, especially since only 50 people are allowed on the 18-mile long island per day ;-)

Imagine running into that while walking in your yard at night.Wow! Never been there, but the college where I'm a department chair owns a boatload of property there. Sometimes the biology department takes a bunch of students there for research (and funn -- I'm not gonna lie). I *must* join them sometime.;-)
BTW the presence of spiders is occurring sooner than normal here in GA. I dunno why. Normally I don't notice them until October.

I heard our dry weather up here is triggering an early fall..could that be it?

Are they really called banana spiders? Looks like a pretty place. Never been there. Bsmarty, I love that tree in your tar. Looks like the perfect club house tree.

Dry weather does essentially trigger an early fall. The lack of water to the trees shuts them down or forces them to go dormant, losing their leaves so that the tree can conserve energy, thus similar to what the cooler fall weather does.

I'd do that too, flat spiders are the only ones I like.

It was once owned by the Carnegie family as their southern coastal getaway. Several incredible homes were built there, but the servants are thought to have burned one to the ground while the Carnegie's were away. One of the Carnegie girls wanted to get married there, so the house was rebuilt specifically for the wedding, then it burned again. Now, only the remains of that house can be seen. There are a couple of cool people who live on the island year round, but most work for the Fed Gov't. Most of the Island is a National Seashore.
