Has anyone heard if Alys is building a football stadium on the northeast side of the property? They have had a big huge light that was an annoying source of light pollution for as long as we've lived here. Tonight, I go out and there is another, brighter light pointed right toward our house. The two lights face each other, and look for all the world like the lights you'd see in a high school football stadium. I was looking forward to trying to watch the meteor shower tonight, but it is so bright out I can't even see a star. Try as I might, I can't imagine why they are going to so much trouble to light a big sandlot with intensely bright blue white light all night, every night. Anyone know?

I hate to hear that. I was hoping you were going to talk about the lights on the palm trees. (Are those the bright lights? Hope not--I thought they were pretty.)
Light pollution is one of my major pet peeves. There's a gas station a half mile down the road that drowns out all my stars, and I hate it. I'm hoping that the low-impact lighting will get more attention as the years go on.
I went to a shopping center recently to hear a friend play. It's a new, high-end place, and the lights are wonderful. The parking lot was well-lit so that I felt safe getting out of my car, but you can't see the lights until you are actually right there in it. It made me so happy.
Maybe it will catch on...

I am sure you will get an answer on here soon. I know of two Alys Beach people that are on the sowal board. They mainly lurk, but I know they look about every day or two. Ok.....gulls we are waiting on an answer. Help.

It was just the Moon reflecting off the white rooftops.
Don't worry about missing the meteor shower last night. The sky was so filled with clouds that I couldn't see a single star.

It's not the palm tree lighting. I love the lighting on the palm trees, I also love the new copper light fixtures they installed this week (though I'd prefer those a little dimmer, too -- especially if they'll be installed on the south side of 30-A). In general, I think Alys hits all the right notes design-wise and if my fairy godmother showed up and said "any house you wish" it would definitely be in Alys.
But these lights, these lights just dominate the night sky. It's so out of keeping with the rest of Alys. And it's not moonlight on rooftops, it's stadium lighting shining into our bedroom all night. I find the moonlight on those rooftops and glinting off the gulf in the background very beautiful, I wish I could still see that view but it's eclipsed by the anti-aircraft searchlights.

Is it temporary construction lightning? Maybe there is a contractual construction deadline that is needed to be met with soon, and the contractor is working throught the night? Either way, to use some legal jargon here, light pollution just plain sucks!

Most likely, it is lighting (cheap security) at the job site.

There is no work at night. It looks like they are guarding a bunch of sandpiles.

needs to get out more
the switch is on the back wall of fonville.

It is security lighting, which they've had since construction began 2 1/2 years ago. They move the lights periodically.

I think you could call code enforcement. I think the lighting ordinance says that the light can not invade your property.....
