THANK YOU SJ, for setting the record straight!!! I am not normally known for being exactly PC and think alot of the times people overreact to the English language and it's uses...but this refugee thing has got to stop! Some of the media just will not stop using it! Adding fuel to the fire perhaps?

Why do you have an empty camper sitting in a State Park to begin with? :idontno:

AB, I can only hope and pray that you now realize, what a grave mistake your posting was. I really can't imagine that you were serious, that anyone could be so concerned about themselves and their "empty" trailor, gas, etc., with SO much suffering going on! SJ is right on, about the correction. Some of us are trying to help, in any way possible. Why? Because these Americans are evacuees and but for the grace of God, go us! :nono1:

I took it to mean those campers left behind would be driving off, ie, leaving the neighborhood. :idontno: Also, the part about going to pick the camper up- I took to mean it may be frustrating to find gasoline during his trip.

Maybe I read it out of context??

So far, AB has not hinted at any thing like what he sounded like, but I could not think of his statement in another way. Your interpretation sounds more like AB. He is probably sad to have his neighborhood away from home broken up, by everyone having to depart. I bet he knows all of the long-termers pretty well, and they him.

Doesn't that sound like the AB you guys know?:idontno: Thanks SunnyDaze for providing a little light.

In hindsight, I remember the 1st time I heard the media use the word refugee and thought it didn't sound right. It is very insensitive to continue to use it because it is not the correct word and is so misused.

Like others I am not usually PC but in this case it continues to bother me. As for the trailer, state park, the reference to the evacuees, and the gas, sounds like AB was not having his best posting day and maybe he will come back and reply, defend himself (undefenseable IMO), or just stand firm with his references? :idontno:

It isn't fair for everyone to be so quick to judge AB. Granted, there are horrendous things going on right now. However, it is human nature and understandable to look at a situation to see how it affects us. AB is losing a little bit of his life. I'm sure y'all would be as frustrated as he is if you were in the same situation. How do we know what AB is doing to help Katrina victims (people or animals)? I just hate to see a good member of this SoWal community attacked.

I heard an evacuee just today on the news, talking about how they were "taking refuge" in TX, and thought it ironic that he would use that word, and no one think anything of it.

I don't use the term, out of respect for these peoples' feelings, but I don't feel that the word itself is meant to be insulting.

Actualy, I think the ones that evacuated on their own are now refugees and the ones that had to be helped to leave are the evacuees. All of the ones that are still alive are survivors.

All kidding aside. Hopefully, a lot of them will be better off than before. That many poverty stricken people in one place breeds more poverty stricken people. It's the Crab Bucket Theory. The Crab Bucket Theory states: If one crab pulls himself up to the rim of the bucket to escape, another crab in the bottom of the bucket will latch on to him and try to pull him back down.

Based on that theory, this tragedy is a chance for some to get away to a better situation and future. Especially the kids. One of those kids may even become President one day because of this life changing event.

NPR had a good program the other day about how the disaster presents a window of opportunity for repairing not only the physical aspects of the city of New Orleans (levees, increasing elevations where possible, etc), but also to repair the social fabric, i.e.., poverty, corruption, and other social problems that are now exposed...

However, New Orleans is so unique, it is terrible to think of all of the people who have been forced to leave the city, no matter what their circumstances...

"Taking refuge" is correct.

WARNING: M rated  (and probably a little crazy since I've just got in and now have to go right back). Got back this AM with the first load o stuff (boat, etc) from our 'vacation home' at the state park (a nice 'house' in a nice place - cheap rent, utilities included, and no property tax!). It was a madhouse. Some of the old folks have lived there for years, it is their permanent address, and are unable to hardly walk much less move, but they are being towed somewhere, I dont know where. Others have their 'vacation homes' there too, apparently couldn't be contacted and they are just being towed, again I dont know where, leaving all their stuff, even freezers, just laying there. They were being evicted! THERE WAS A FAMILY THERE FROM NEW ORLEANS WHO EVACUATED AND LOST EVERYTHING WHO WERE FORCED TO LEAVE THE CAMPGROUND TO MAKE ROOM FOR THIS TRASH. The ones that are coming are supposedly from the superdome, the ones they moved to the astrodome and they are now moving again because of bloody football starting and they didnt want them either. I pPray that we're wrong and that they're nice old people, but the campground store had to pack up everything as "they dont have any money and they would steal everything". I was told not to put my camper into storage there as the state park and it's state troopers and park rangers "couldnt guarantee the security of our items". Our lovely gov bob "i'll do anything for money' ssseigleman sold alabama out to fema at the going rate of promises of sewer systems put in the campgrounds. fema just bought 20,000 trailers and are heading throughout the southeast, no, just make that Alabama. Thank God For Mississippi who told fema that it's own citizens needed a place to camp. I'll be standing next to the 80-year-old veteran who said he'd make a stand and try to keep them from removing his motorhome. Guess our rental homes will be next - move a refugee in for free or they will take your rental home by force. I'm severing all ties with Alabama asap. I'm bringing the camper to Mississippi where they still have some integrity and still believe in State's Rights. Good Luck, you'll need it.

Oh, and I said I'd just rent them my camper and I was told they have to stay in fema-owned campers as that's the law and they all have to be the same size and color (so that nobody gets jealous and kill each other or something?). Sounds like animals.

BTW, just found out that these poor-old twits get 2k each for being evacuated. We evacuated Ivan, lost it all, and didn't get a dime, providing they sign docs saying they wont sue the govt - sounds like payoffs to 9-11 victims, dont it.

And finally, Gas is available and going back down again since the Labor Day gouging session is over.

In Mississippi State Parks, the rule is that 'refugees' may stay for free, in FEMA campers or whatever they already have, and anyone else who wishes to stay there may stay there too. No Forced Evictions In Mississippi. I like it here!
