Alright you can laugh. I'm not going to be offended because I know I deserve it. Merman and I are going to Family Day at Purdue and the big thing of the day is the football game against Central Michigan. I bought tickets for it because I thought at my advanced age it was about time I went to a football game. I know, I know, you don't know how anyone can not have gone to a football game in their whole life but I assure you if you are me, it's not only possible, it's inevitable. ;-)
Tickets were $39 or $20, and you know which ones I bought. The knothole tickets. I haven't a clue as to what the heck a knothole is. Does this mean I bought tickets that don't have a seat? Are we going to have to stand up for the whole game?
Please be merciful as you explain to me what I did. And if you crack a rib laughing don't blame me please!

Bag o beer, this will certainly catch on. You can increase your cup size to a D at the same time.

Love it! My daughter is the queen of sneaking stuff into Churchill Downs for the Derby in ways similar to this. I'll have to get all her secrets.
Mermy the tailgating is where all the funn is. It won't matter where you sit in the stadium after a few hours of tailgating in the parking lot.

Mermaid,
Make sure you stop by Slayter Hill about 90 minutes before kickoff for the Purdue All-American Marching Band concert. It's a great place to gather before the game.
And check out the Cymbal section in the drum-line. I heard they are fantastic this year.

I still can't get over the fact that you have NEVER been to a football game. When you were in high school did you not go to any of your school's football games? It's all people watching anyway. Have funn.
I went to Mount Saint Mary Seminary for high school. A girl's college prep. We had no football. The boy's school across town did, but it never crossed my mind to go to one of their games.

Camp Creek Lou, you have found me out! I'm really going to the game so I can see the fantastic half time. For a university that has no formal music department, Purdue has some absolutely amazing musicians...not to mention the world's largest drum. They'll be hauling that baby out!!

Mermy in the cheap seats. All is right with the world.

Oh Miss Kitty is just jealous that I always get such great bargains. She thinks it's being cheap. Or I'm being cheap is more like it! Ah well. What can I say in my defense when I'm the one who bought the kneehole tickets--I'm hanged by my own rope...

Yes I am excited because not only is it our first college football game, it's also going to be our first tailgate party!
Friends of ours are Purdue alumni and they take their tailgate parties very seriously. I swear, if anyone can teach us the game of football, it will be these people. We're in good hands for the Saturday kick-off!! Go Boilermakers! (I just bought an antenna flag for the car. ;-) )SoWal Insider

I am having a visual of the Mers sitting on the concrete stadium floor, trying to peek at the game through a knee-level hole. And trying not to spill beer while doing it!

Well, how was your first football game?????

Can't wait to hear about your 1st game experience.
Please tell all. I can't remember a weekend in Sept.Oct.Nov when I haven't attended some sort of football event. My husband has only missed 3 UGA home games (and not many away games) since he was 5 (and he is 10 times that now). The ones he missed were only because someone died inconveniently and 1 for a minor drinking indescretion when he was in high school. He's on the road to SOWAl now after gonig to yesterday's game. Wish I were heading that way too.
Go DAWGS!!!

Perfect Day For Boilermakers!! It was so much funn. First off, "knothole" seats are the ones at the south end zone behind the goal posts. So when Purdue was playing at this end (1st and 3rd quarters) we saw the most spectacular touchdowns. We were in the 37th row and had a really good view. 2nd and 4th quarters not so much so but hey, two out of four and you're not going to get any complaints from me.
Everyone was wearing black and old gold, including me. I might not know diddly about sports but I know how to dress. I was a coordinated Boilermaker from the underwear to the outerwear. Go Boilermakers!!
Halftime game sported 1500 musicians--Purdue and many high school bands since it was a Band Day game. I really liked it but the rabid fan behind me, who was so instructional during the game, had as much interest in the music side of the event as I do for the sporting side of the event. That is to say, not exactly 100% enthusiasm. (sorry; I really do try
) He talked on his cell through nearly all the music. Ah well. Let's see. I learned how to "boiler up" which is a hand motion like you're pulling the steam whistle of a locomotive. Done to the sound of marching band music before and after touchdowns, firstdowns, meltdowns, etc.
And I think I finally "got" it. Football is really exciting when it looks like there's going to be a touchdown. And being in a crowd of 60,000+ is really exciting too especially when everyone's so enthusiastic and happy and the weather's great. And it's funn to watch the student section when they get on a big cheering jag. They're nuts! And then....tailgate!!!!!!!! Is is sacreligious to say that was even maybe slightly better? Everyone had tents and there was more Purdue insignia pasted on, painted on, pinned on, nailed on and sewed on than I have ever seen in my whole life. I mean, I"m talking RVs plastered with Boilermaker stuff, tents, grills, tables, blankets, chairs, the whole get-up. I wish I'd brought my camera. And the food and drink...oh my my. I won't even embarass myself by telling you what time I woke up this morning after yesterday's indulgences. I don't think I've eaten or drunk so much, well, since maybe my last trip to SoWal. ;-) We didn't leave until the sun was way low in the sky.
I had a perfect day at Purdue. Go Boilermakers!

Black and gold are great jewelry colors- you could start a whole business making Boilermaker earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, and selling them at tailgate!!
