Caution, Out-of-Towners Heading for the Beach

Be aware that it is officially mating season for the Love Bugs. Today, I began seeing tourists' cars covered in smeared Love Bugs. If you hope to see through your windshield, pull out the old hat of tricks, one of which is to use plenty of Rain-X on your windshield, which won't repel them from splattering, but it will make clean up easier. Fill those windshield washer fluid tanks on your cars, and replace those worn out wiper blades. It could save you from crashing your car. As a reminder, the splattered bugs get more difficult to come off, the longer you leave them on your car. Get it washed ASAP. Beachy Clean Car Wash is open on Hwy 98, near the western end of 30A, but slightly to the east of that intersection.

RiverOtter once mentioned spraying the front of the car with a cooking spray, like Pam, again, to make it easier to wash off the bugs. I'd hate for the cooking spray to blow onto my windshield. If nothing else, I bet a quick rub on the front end and just above the windshield, with some of that liquid wax, would help prevent the Love Bugs from sticking forever.

91% Isopropyl Alcohol rubbed with a clean towel, will help remove the bugs after they splatter. I think it works much better than any bug and tar remover on the market, and it's a helluva lot cheaper.

Those bugs are so irritating. I hit Beachy Clean last time and they did a great job. This time, I'll call you when we hit town.

We were at the Okaloosa -Walton College campus yesterday for a cross country meet, and the little lovers were the first things I noticed- they were sneaking out of the bushes, literally!! Only ended up with one bug in my water. I am takng the Rain-X advice for the car.

Guess I need to add Rain-X and rubbing alcohol to my hurricane preparedness list since the seasons coincide!

Get the 91% alcohol, which is found at mostly at pharmacies. Grocery stores typically have only the 70%. The 91% also works as a good fuel source for cooking on a homemade camp stove, which should come in very handy in a power outage after a hurricane, though with two engineering boy scout peeps in your house, you should have no worries during an emergency.

:floor: I might last a little while, but I might starve if I had nothing more than ants to eat. I've watched that guy make a meal off of big ants.

Do y'all plan to have all the lovebugs splattered before the HoDown? When does mating season end?

(I don't want all that extra residue on my windshield.)

You think Glenfiddich Special Reserve will work?.......

("But officer, I only use it to remove love bugs from my windshield.")

Warm water mixed with a moderate amount of Arm and Hammer will take care of the mess and leave your car clean and fresh.

A "moderate" amount? Always use baking soda in moderation, right?

OH SHEEEETTTTT!!! :bang:

I forgot all about the little busterds!!! We will be there Sat PM and I just waxed the black stallion. If memory serves me right, they mate for about three or four weeks and the blood and guts look terrible on a fresh wax job.

Bring on the Rain-X and 91% alchy!!!

My question is this - if they are out-of-towners, where are they coming from? And why do they come here?

The out of towners to whom I refer are the tourists, not the bugs. The bugs mostly affect the tourists, because they are driving at high rates of speed, and splatter more bugs than the people who are driving slower speeds around here.

Um. So many terrible things could be said right now, and I'll just let you pick one for me...

Maybe it just takes that long for the females to be satisfied. ;-)

Sounds like getting splattered on the windshield at the height of passion is probably the best solution for both parties?

I always wondered why they committed suicide prior to the laying of the eggs, and how the population continues to prosper with so many deaths prior to laying eggs.
