Too Much Excitement!

I need some help, all you worldly-wise individuals!

I am taking a little bitty vacation to New York in two weeks to see one of my former students in a Broadway play, which is awfully exciting all by itself.

I am travelling with another former student, who is 20 years old and has never even been on a plane. Hence, I have some planning to do. I want us both to have a good time, but she and I are both broke college students.

If you had a Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday evening (we're seeing the play on Saturday afternoon,) all day Sunday, and a couple of hours on Monday morning in New York, what would you do?

There are 3 things that a dear friend of mine showed me in NYC a few years ago that I think we might try: The Metropolitan Museum, Central Park, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

We're also looking at going to see the Bodies exhibit (we both missed it in Atlanta, and I might be meeting a SoWaller there!) We also want to see the Trade Center site.

What else? The "Today" show? (Or maybe Jon Stewart or Conan?) Empire State? Brooklyn Bridge? Ellis Island? We're staying in midtown, so we're close to stuff...

p.s. The previews are on for the season premeire of "Prison Break." I have the shivers. Love that show.

I'm all about the wandering. That's really what we did last time I was there. However, I was with a resident who knew where to wander so I feel the need to plan the wandering.

Loved the Friends and Cosby info.

As for the Met, I'll defer that decision to my friend, since I've been there. What about the M of Modern Art, the M of Natural History, and the Guggie?

Museum of Natural History. I could spend a whole week there. Have you seen "Night at the Museum"? I can't wait to go back after seeing this movie and imagine the exhibits coming to life!

Not sure exactly when you will be there....but 9/30/07 HAZMAT modine is playing at the Brooklyn Chile Festival @ 2:00. Look them up on myspace. some great music if you feel like detouring out to Crooklyn.

I will, in fact, be there on the 30th. On the list. Your music is always so fun...

My thought exactly. I just watched it over the weekend!

The MONH is that big that you could easily spend a week there and still not see everything.

I'm jealous, too! Never been, but if you do take a cab, make sure you only take minivan taxis and look for Ben Bailey in the CASH CAB!!

Go to the library and get your pic taken w/ one of the lions too!

I always like to hit at least one museum and if memory serves, they are open late so you can hit them for a couple hours after it is too dark for general sightseeing.

Why only minivan taxis?

Remember, I am a museum freak. I like to read all of the info in each exhibit. Those are great museums, but NYC is to be experienced on the streets. The museums have nothing to do with experiencing NYC. Save museums for a museum specific trip, like a week long trip to DC, and hit every museum on the Mall and the little spy museum downtown. The problem for me with going to museums is that they take up all of my time, and if your goal is to experience NYC, I think your time would be better spent wandering the streets of SoHo, walking around Central Park, etc., and maybe even sitting on the steps in front of the Met for 30 minutes.

Will has the International Spy Museum t-shirt. What a gem, that place! We had to drag him out of there.

OK NoHall- sorry- back to NYC. Trinity Church, across the street from the WTC site. I cried like a baby. I bet you will too.

I agree that the flavor of the city is part of its draw and you should take some time to experience/view it, but New York has some of the best museums in the country/world! Don't miss an opportunity to see at least part of one!

The museum debate:

I probably will go to some sort of museum(s), knowing from the get-go that I won't have time to appreciate the exhibits like I want to. However, I want at least see them. I enjoy the architecture of those sorts of places.

I want to take my brother back to D.C. so that we can spend a month reading every stinkin' placard in the Smithsonian...

Wouldn't it be great if I could download all the little placards from each exhibit and read them beforehand? Then I could go look without having to read.

NoHall, we're headed to NYC this weekend and what a beautiful weekend it looks to be. The only things that we have scheduled so far is dinner at BLT Prime and to see the play Spring Awakening. Can't wait. Other things that we are considering are to walk the Brooklyn Bridge and have pizza on the other side at Grimaldi's Pizzeria at 19 Old Fulton St., stroll Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village (north end of the park) to admire the 19th century townhouses, have a pint at Pete's Tavern (oldest operating establishment), walk the Central Park reservoir and go to the Empire State Building at dusk to watch the lights come on. Whatever you decide to do have a blast!!!! It's all great.

Clap extra hard for Ernst (Blake Daniel.) He's the reason I'm going up there. He's one of the high school kids I've worked with for the last several years.

Thank you! Y'all too--that sounds like a great plan. I hope to make it to the Empire State Building, too; hadn' thought of doing it at dusk!

I'll tell him that I sent y'all!

I don't know how sensitive you are, but I had several people warn me that the story is not exactly "Oklahoma!" More like this generation's "Hair" But set in the late 1800s in Germany.) You might want to :google:. I read the Wikipedia synopsis; there is kind of a spoiler in it. Everyone who warned me also told me that it is a great play--very well done. (I guess it has to be, to win 8 Tonys!)

T-minus three days--I have a really long list, a boat load of maps, and a book with a dozen little flags in it.

Here's the funny part: I just found out Friday night that my high school drama teacher, who often hires me to play for her shows, is going to be in town at the same time. This is where you start humming "It's a Small World."

(And this is where you stop humming. I hate that song.)

Tomorrow night is the big planning session. Wanna hear what is planned so far? (Sure you do)
  • Friday: Get off the plane at LaGuardia at 1:29.
  • Arrive in Harlem to dump suitcases at 3-ish.
  • Breathe for no more than 10 minutes.
  • Guggenheim at 5:45, since they have a special thing on Friday night.
  • Maybe the Empire State Building.
  • Saturday: TODAY show at 7 a.m.
  • Tour Rockerfeller Center. Check on tickets for SNL.
  • Jump on down to WTC site.
  • St. Paul's/Trinity Churches
  • Federal Reserve, NYSE, pet the bull.
  • If this is finished by 10:30, check on the Staten Island Ferry times.
  • SPRING AWAKENING at 2:00
  • Empire State, if we missed it on Friday.
  • Museum of Natural History, probably just from the outside.
  • Chinatown, Little Italy
  • SNL, if possible
  • Sunday: toward Brooklyn. See if we can find "Friends" apt., just for funn
  • Cross Brooklyn Bridge.
  • Grimaldi's Pizzeria with friend from high school, if he's available
  • Check on the Chili Festival, HAZMAT Modine
  • Head back to town and take off up 5th Avenue to see all that junk
  • Central Park.
  • Another show, possibly. Thinking about HAIRSPRAY or CURTAINS.
  • If no show, do all the other stuff we didn't get to do yet.
  • Monday: Breakfast with my kid who's in SPRING AWAKENING, I hope. Catch a flight out of LaGuardia at 11:20.
Ambitious? Maybe. Exciting? Fer Sher.
