Too Much Excitement!

I need some help, all you worldly-wise individuals!

I am taking a little bitty vacation to New York in two weeks to see one of my former students in a Broadway play, which is awfully exciting all by itself.

I am travelling with another former student, who is 20 years old and has never even been on a plane. Hence, I have some planning to do. I want us both to have a good time, but she and I are both broke college students.

If you had a Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday evening (we're seeing the play on Saturday afternoon,) all day Sunday, and a couple of hours on Monday morning in New York, what would you do?

There are 3 things that a dear friend of mine showed me in NYC a few years ago that I think we might try: The Metropolitan Museum, Central Park, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

We're also looking at going to see the Bodies exhibit (we both missed it in Atlanta, and I might be meeting a SoWaller there!) We also want to see the Trade Center site.

What else? The "Today" show? (Or maybe Jon Stewart or Conan?) Empire State? Brooklyn Bridge? Ellis Island? We're staying in midtown, so we're close to stuff...

p.s. The previews are on for the season premeire of "Prison Break." I have the shivers. Love that show.

Spring Awakening was a great show and the music was fabulous!!! Was Blake sitting in the chairs on the right side of the stage? Also, when you talk to Blake, would love to know about how many actors had to audition for each part.

Your Saturday schedule sounds ambitious but I hope you get it all in!!!

wow...i'm dizzy...and you're actually going to see HAZMAT modine:clap:   have funn!

You've never steered me wrong. I'm hoping to catch up with Eddie in Crooklyn

I don't see any mention of watching football on Saturday? :idontno: :yikes:

Not unless you can find me an Australian Rules game in Manhattan.

I thought the Today Show fired Katey Kouruck. :idontno: If they didn't, they should have. Scratch that one from the list.

Katie Couric is now the anchor for the CBS Evening News. (I like her, by the way!) They replaced her with Meredith Vieira, who was on "The View" and the daytime version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" I was underwhelmed when they announced they were hiring her, but she has grown on me. I just want to stand in Rockefeller Plaza (I figured I could hold up a Chicken, to represent my hometown, with a SoWal sticker on it.)

The play-by-play continues:

My little traveling companion just came by so that we could cover all the bases (I think I mentioned that she hasn't been on a plane since she was really little.) Besides the packing, we went over the tentative itinerary with maps, schedules, websites, etc. in hand.

I brought up the idea of adding another show, since we're both theatre geeks. HAIRSPRAY, CURTAINS, and LEGALLY BLONDE (believe it or not) were the shows that my drama teacher recommended based on the quality of the production, but as we went down the list of other stuff on Broadway, she looked at me sheepishly and asked, "What about SPAMALOT?"

In the words of the immortal and infamous Biff, "BWHAAAAA!" I told her that in my secret heart of hearts, I was wanting to see that, too. So add that to the Sunday evening at 7 slot. (We even got good seats at about 30% off!)

Trip report preview (pics later; I'm pushing 22 hours awake after only sleeping 2 hours last night!) So far, we're ahead of schedule!

  • Landed 1:30 p.m.
  • in Harlem by 3-ish.
  • Hung out with host for a few minutes, hit the street.
  • Late lunch.
  • Subway to Canal Street.
  • Did some "private shopping." Great purses.
  • Subway back up to 5th Avenue at south end of Central Park.
  • Walked through Central Park to Metropolitan Museum of Art
    Didn't go in--just window shopped.
  • Stopped by the Apple Store on 5th Avenue--very cool place.
  • Had some MAJOR funn in FAO Schwartz. (Hop--I rode a wave board through the store, and missed you a lot!)
  • Trump Tower, Tiffany's.
  • Realized that my recently purchased Prada purchases were still at FAO Schwartz next to the big piano.
  • RAN two blocks back to store in Birkenstocks and a cute little dress, delivered a Tony-worthy performance for the security guy, who let me back in to get my junk.
  • Explored St. Patrick's Cathedral
  • Went to Times Square, ate supper
  • Waited outside the stage door for SPRING AWAKENING to end. Before I saw my friend in the show, I saw my high school drama teacher.
  • Gave a cast member (total stranger) my autograph.
  • Peppermint martinis with a bunch of high school teachers

I think I died about two hours ago. We may forego Rockefeller Plaza in the morning. Tired gulls...

He did sit in the chairs on your right for part of the show. He was also the tallest one in the show--about 6'2" and very thin, with red hair.

The original audition was an open call in April, and he was in there with 1600 other guys. I don't have the numbers for the rest of the auditions, but his first callback was at the end of July, followed by another two a week after that.

I almost tinkled my pants when the show started. The band was on stage, and I noticed that the accompanist was barefooted and a lightbulb came on in my head. Because I've been researching the gender gap in professional music I knew that the musical director was one of the very, very few female musical directors on Broadway, but for some reason I never figured that she would be on stage tonight. (I read in an article that she likes to perform barefooted.)

So guess who had a lovely, scholarly conversation with me about female musical directors and a bunch of other stuff after the show?

Are you laughing at my life? If not, try this on: The two male leads came up to me after the show and said, "Hey! I saw you on the street today!" Such nice kids...

Glad to see you made it home from the bar, Kitty!

We actually slept late this morning (after going to bed early--good stuff!) but my phone woke me up this morning. Some lady with a New York accent, and I didn't have really good reception. (Not sure if it was my phone or my brain that wasn't working.) After a minute or so, I figured out that it was Mango!

Yay...It was so good to put a voice with the Name!

I'm having such a good time.
