We were in Las Vegas this past week and these commercials were running constantly on TV. I personally have not set foot in a WalMart in about 5 years, because of personal dealings on my end with their health insurance coverage and treatment of their employees.

What do y'all think about this? Do you shop at WalMart and why?

I try to avoid it like the plague. Pun intended. I briefly worked there for about 2 months. I can honestly say I have never been treated worse by an employer.

I shop there several times a year for the items I can't get anywhere else and also go there for the eye doctor who was recommended in the Pre-Sacred Heart Sandestin days.

Can't stand their business model, store size, crappy products, heavy influence in the economy, or what it does to local businesses that provide higher quality products and great service, so I shop there ONLY as a last resort.

Happily, as the area grows I find there are less and less items that can't be found somewhere else.

I go there for the Great Value basalmic vinegar. I also enjoy a stroll through the premises watching the patrons.....makes me feel skinny.

Me and some friends had a conversation about Wal-Mart the other day. We all agreed the longer you stay in there the better the crappy merchandise looks. We also agreed that there must be something they pump in the a/c vents to cause this phenomenon.

Oh it definitely helps to be buzzed or all out drunk to go shopping at Wally World, especially during season.

A few more weeks of posting and we can compile your full resume. That's at least the third place (maybe 4th) you have mentioned working.

I judge store by their scent as I walk into them.

I am a big fan of Saks and Macy's because of the blending of the cosmetics and better apparel dept. (real wool smells better than polyester). Target smell good too, a lot better during the X-mas season with all the scented merchandise thrown in.....

Wal Mart is NOT as good--the added smell of rubber tires and bad produce ruins the mix!

If I had to judge Publix by that measure, I'd never have groceries. That place smells like Ye Olde Holiday Whorehouse this time of year.

WalMart really is a terrible company...they exemplify the worst of this country, and capitalism in general. My reasons are pretty much the same as Beachbummett's. The people that make a living wage (I think there are about three per store) have 100% coverage. Everyone else has to buy their own insurance out of their paychecks, and it covers nothing. These poor people still get a huge bill, which they of course can't pay. The doctor ends up writing off the cost -- so, every doctor in this country is basically subsidizing Wal-Mart.

I do, however, really respect the leadership they have shown by introducing the $4 generic drug program. If the $4 drug formulary were used by everyone as a first resort, we'd no longer have a healthcare crisis in this country.

My philosophy is if I can't find it at Target and Publix, I don't need it.

I went to Wal-mart a couple of months ago after not being in the store for a long time (I was in the neighborhood). Needless to say I was disgusted at everything from the crappy produce and meat to the lack of service and selection. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I won't be back by choice. I was a "regular" before Target changed my life.

My family in Utah swears that Walmart smells like vomit and they don't go near it.

Beachbummett, we don't shop there for those same reasons and more--the fact that they are now running commercials extolling the fact they have lots of checkout lanes open this holiday season is very telling; they have to try to redeem themselves because of how terribly they treat their customers, even.

If you think the produce in Not-So-Super-Wal-mart is crappy, let me invite you to Kelly's Grocery Store, located in Freeport. I should take photos the next time I'm in there. Every cashier in there has a cough, year-round, and I'm not sure if they have the Flu or if it is smoker's hack, or a combination of both. I used to think that Winn-Dixie was the bottom of the barrel, but I'm telling you that NotSo-SuperWalmart looks nice and shiny compared to Kelly's.

When I was hiking to Maine, I remember hitching a ride into a couple of towns which had a NotSo-SuperWalMart, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. They had everything and more, that a person could ever need or want, and they even had air-conditioning. It was easy to spend three to four hours in there, just looking at all the crap that I didn't need. Where else can you go and play with so many toys for free? I guess people's thoughts of WalMart come from there own experiences. I've been working on being at peace when I enter the doors of WallyMart, but there tend to be a lot of rude people standing in between me and peace.

There's a tag line for you: "I've been working on being at peace...but there tend to be a lot of rude people standing in between me and peace."

That describes my whole Christmas frame of mind, and why I won't go to Wal Mart OR the Mall OR Target during Christmas...

Well SJ, I suppose you could always apply to be a greeter at Wal-Mart. YOU wouldn't be rude. It sounds like you are feeling the love about Wal-Mart (or wish that you could). :idontno::rolling: Good luck with that.

Saying that I am a fan of Walmart would be wrong. I think they have sh_tty business practices from what I've read, seen and heard. In fact, the only thing good about them is their price and convenience of being one stop shop. However, those come at the expense of our health, other local business owners, jobs of locals, jobs of Americans, and with higher risk to our country as we rely more heavily on imports. The produce may be all nice and shiny, and the toys may be fun to play with, but there are more important things in life. I never knew that Publix in WaterColor was expensive until I walked through the grocery isle at Walmart.

Again, I'm not so high on NotSo SuperWalmart. I'm just less excited about Kelly's in Freeport. Makes me scared to park in the parking lot, much less actually walk inside and have coughing clerks put their hands on my food. Everything is relative.

I would think that with so many people being on tight budgets these days, Walmart would be winning more customers than it is losing, based solely on the price of their goods. I'm sure they sell a bunch of junk, but they also carry those same brands of every grocery item you can think of, unless you are a Whole Foods shopper.

They were thinking either

A) There are a lot of incontinent old people who will probably have visitors over the holidays and will need something to drown out the reek of urine in a way those subtle and delicate Glade Plug-Ins can't.

B) Camp Creek Kid's family may be in from Utah...we must do something to hide the vomit smell!

My husband's (who despises Wal-mart) favorite wal-mart story: My daughter desperately needed a pair of red soffees for cheer camp. We thought we would just quickly run into the Wal-mart on the east end of PCB (over by Captain Andersons). Unfortunately is was 6:30 on Friday night and the folks piling into town to stay in the huge high rises were all in the store. (thousands of them). Every checkout was open with 7 or 8 people in line. Most of whom were wearing tank tops and no shoes. All the shopping carts were filled to the brim with gallons of milk, cases of beer, huge bags of potato chips and giant boxes of Cheerios.
:yikes:

My husband freaked out. Went to non-busy customer service counter and told the girl that he would pay her whatever it took to just let him out of there with the red shorts. Obviously she saw the panic in his eyes and checked him out. Thank god she did, because his next plan was to just toss $20 onto the counter and walk out.

I did get the girl's name and send a nice letter into the company.

For future reference, tell your husband that, as long as he doesn't have produce items which need to be weighed, he can also check out at the "Jewelry" counter and the sporting good counter, which are usually not nearly as busy as the front counters during spring break.

Here's some trivia for you from a few years ago -- not sure if it still holds true today, but out of all the walmarts in the world, the one in Destin had the highest dollar volume of sales for wine, and the one in Panama City Beach had the highest dollar volume for beer sales.

The average family's grocery bill at Wal-Mart vs Publix is why I do not believe a Publix would thrive in DeFuniak. I have listened to many of my co-workers lament how expensive Winn-Dixie is. And Winn-Dixie isn't expensive.

I try to avoid the Wal-Mart in DeFuniak like the plague. However, I do shop the one in Destin on occasion, normally when I have to go for several items and we are running low on frozen foods. For example, a Tony's frozen pizza is $2.00 at WalMart, and I happen to like them. Can't do that at Publix. But I try to make an event out of it so I don't have to go for another month.

Nobody can argue that Publix is more expensive than Wal-Mart. Everything is more expensive than it is at Wal-Mart. But being the fourth buggy in line with $200.00 worth of Wal-Mart and only three lanes open really, really sucks, and fortunately I am no longer in the situation where it is my only option.

This is a great movie if you want to understand the impact WalMart has on a local economy. Especially if you believe that commercial about Wal-Mart helping Americans live better.
