and there's one other person on the elevator with you, do you feel the need to speak to that person? I mean to "converse" with the person? Or do you just smile? Do you just say "hi"? I need to brush up on my elevator etiquette.

I look them in the eye, say "Hi, how are you?" and see what happens from there. Older people like to chat, younger people, not so much.

Depends I guess. But most of the time I smile and say Hi.

Fun Things to Do in an Elevator
Are you brave enough to try these?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When there is only one other person in the elevator, tap them on the shoulder and then pretend it wasn't you.
Sit with a desk, pencil cup and a telephone in the elevator. When someone walks in, ask if they have an appointment. (thanks to Shoaib)
Push a button, pretend it gave you a shock. Smile and go back for more.
Ask the others in the elevator which floor they're going to, but push the wrong buttons.
Call the Psychic Hotline and ask them if they know which floor you're on.
Hold the doors open as if you're waiting for a friend, but then let it close. Say to nobody, "Hey, Wally, how's it been?"
Drop a pen, wait for someone to pick it up and then yell, "That's mine!"
Put a cardboard box in the corner; when someone gets on ask them if they can hear ticking.
When the doors close, announce, "Don't worry, they'll open again soon."
Enforce a group hug.
Open your purse slightly and say, "Do you have enough air in there?"
Tell one of the other passengers that you're sorry, but you're going to have to let him go.
Wave hands wildly at invisible flies buzzing around your head.
Make race car noises when anyone gets on or off.
Shave.
Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside ask: "Got enough air in there?"
Stand silent and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.
When arriving at your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open, then act embarrassed when they open by themselves.
Greet everyone getting on the elevator with a warm handshake and ask them to call you "Admiral".
On the highest floor, hold the door open and demand that it stay open until you hear the penny you dropped down the shaft go "plink" at the bottom.
Stare, grinning, at another passenger for a while, and then announce: "I've got new socks on!"
When at least 8 people have boarded, moan from the back: "Oh, not now... motion sickness!"
Bet the other passengers you can fit a quarter in your nose.
Frown and mutter "gotta go, gotta go" then sigh and say "oops!"
Sing along with the Muzak.
Show other passengers a wound and ask if it looks infected.
Walk on with a cooler that says "human head" on the side.
Stare at another passenger for a while, then announce "You're one of THEM!" and move to the far corner of the elevator.
Leave a box between the doors.
Ask each passenger getting on if you can push the button for them.
Wear a puppet on your hand and talk to other passengers "through" it.
Start a sing-along.
When the elevator is silent, look around and ask "is that your beeper?"
Draw a little square on the floor with chalk and announce to the other passengers that this is your personal space.
Announce in a demonic voice: "I must find a more suitable host body."
Carry a blanket and clutch it protectively.
If anyone brushes against you, recoil and holler "Bad touch!"
While the doors are opening, hurriedly whisper, "Hide it. quick!" then whistle innocently.
Are you brave enough to try these?

It depends...as a woman if alone I tend to simply smile...but if with others and secure in my environment I might say hello or strike up a conversation...and then there was that time a couple years back that I...oops that would not be classy at all to discuss on-line. Elevators like all places can offer many opportunities, so like everything in life...don't ever close yourself off for the limitless possibilities...;-)

Sounds like a great story line for the Seaside Theater...It would be a great comedy..especially with the local talent we have

I just smile and ask what floor they are getting out on.

I hate when little kids get on an elevator and do that. I wanna sock the emmeffers. And their parent.

It depends on many factors. I am very comfortable without saying a word, but I have no problem getting right into conversation. When it is a full elevator is when I feel like leading everyone in a song.

Wait a minute, you cannot leave us hanging like that. Spill the beans.

I give a quick, weak smile and then drop my vision to the floor, in hopes that no one strikes up a mindless conversation.
BUT, I always hold the door open for someone to get on. Other than that, I'm done.

Always a smile and a "what floor?"

I smile and say hello. Then I just stand there and NEVER push the button.

I usually give the closed-lipped, eyebrow-raise weird elevator smile. You know the one I'm talking about.
As Brian Regan says, it's the smile that says, "I see you, but I've got nothing to say to you."

needs to get out more
...only pass wind if you are alone...
hmmmm......can't remember
and there's one other person on the elevator with you, do you feel the need to speak to that person? I mean to "converse" with the person? Or do you just smile? Do you just say "hi"? I need to brush up on my elevator etiquette.
If I'm alone, I take the stairs. If there is only one other person in the elevator, we don't talk--we just make out.

I am on elevators every day and they are so much funn! I have a practice, if it is just me plus 1, I always say have a nice day/night/whatever when I get off or then they get off. Otherwise I don't strike up a conversation unless to say I like your coat/shoes/bag/butt/whatever. We compliment each other much too little. Many times there will be people I already know on so I can say "hey" and what about this weather.

Me too!
Sometimes I forget to get off the dern thing when my floor arrives. I think I could've been stuck in there all day just riding up and down.If I'm alone, I take the stairs. If there is only one other person in the elevator, we don't talk--we just make out.
