and there's one other person on the elevator with you, do you feel the need to speak to that person? I mean to "converse" with the person? Or do you just smile? Do you just say "hi"? I need to brush up on my elevator etiquette.

I'll take all these suggestions under advisement. Yesterday, it just seemed so awkward when I was on the elevator with a lady much younger than me. I didn't speak..I did smile. But, she didn't smile back. We were at a hospital, so then I always think..."if I smile, they might have just lost someone at the hospital, so why is this lady smiling"...

Hospitals require extra smiles. I always end up bonding with a family or two. My poor sister is always waiting on me to go say goodbye to someone.

True dat, Miss Kitty! dd, you rock! At least you tried to share some
with the gull. I agree with steele mama when she says we compliment each other too little. On my last Vandy visit in the elevator, I told an elderly I liked her hat, and she smiled back and said, 'thank you'. It was knit and had a visor too. Quite snappy. ;-) Then I told ya'll I spoke to some Iraq vets the time before that and said thanks to them for their sacrifice. I talk a lot.

I usually point out the expired state inspection license, and then we have a common bond for further talk.....

It depends where they rank on the Scooterbug 5 point scale.
3 or above gets a smile, 4 gets a funny conversation depending on the ride length, 5 may get a coffee or drink.
1 or 2 I may wait for the next elevator.

...only pass wind if you are alone...
we used to eat white castles for supper at work then go toot in the elevators and send them to random floors, usually one where there's always people, like where the cafeteria is

This pretty much sums it up for meI have no desire to strike up a conversation on a 2 minute ride with someone that I don't know and will never see again...
Now, If I get trapped in there with them, it's a whole different thing...
this is also what i do. smile and look away
But then if you get off and someone gets on, they'll know who did it.
guilty
But what do you do when someone gets on right after you relieve yourself
i usually bust out laughing.

I like to enthrall people with my otherwise useless knowledge of elevators.
ie-reassuring other riders that we are not going to plummet to the basement as they panic and clutch the handrails, or the pros/cons of lifted elevators vs cable pulled elevators. Lots of funn!

I usually give the closed-lipped, eyebrow-raise weird elevator smile. You know the one I'm talking about.
As Brian Regan says, it's the smile that says, "I see you, but I've got nothing to say to you."
I LOVE Brian Regan!!!! Never miss him when he comes to town, as a matter of fact, he will be in STL next month. I can't wait!!!Beach Fanatic

I like singing along loudly with the elevator music. Otherwise I don't really talk. I have gotten on and made the comment, "Gee, I hope it doesn't fall this time."
I have been stuck in 3 elevators. All of them at FSU.
#1 Some of you may remember the English building at FSU, it was originally a U shape and sometime in the 50's they filled in the middle. The middle was off by half a floor so when they built the elevator it had a door on 2 corners. I was there with my dad over the weekend and had gone to the snack machine when the lights went out. My dad apparently was worried that I would get lost in the corridors and went looking for me. I'll never forget when the elevator started to shake and then the door opened with an FSU cop looking down at me.
#2 The service elevator in the Jenny-Murphrey dorm. This was an old women's dorm and we were in the process of salvaging anything before they renovated it. The only elevator that was in the building was for service/housekeepers and was the old fashioned type with the up and down gates. As we were going down for lunch one day the elevator stopped suddenly and one of the upper gates fell forward. We had to get on top of the elevator and a ladder to reattach the door. I really wish I had a camera of that OSHA violation.
#3 We were on the top floor of the Devinney Dorm and were once again going to lunch. We got on one of the two elevators and the doors closed. We went about a half floor and the elevator lurched and stopped. We thought it had stopped and being that we had been stuck in a few elevators at this point we pried the doors open (kids don't try this at home). We noticed that the closed exterior doors were still moving up, meaning the elevator was slowly going down
. We waited until we had gotten down to the next floor pried the exterior doors open, tucked, and rolled. We found out later from the Otis repairmen that the cable had snapped and while the brakes had worked they were on the verge of failing, hence the slow desent.
