Do some of you..ah...more mature peeps remember shorthand and typing on typewriters with those gross ribbons. I was just sitting here sort of doodling while on the phone and it made me think of shorthand, which lead to typing class, etc. I do remember that I flunked typing class because I had a crush on a guy and we got sent to the office every day for talking and passing notes. It was soooo embarrasing to have to re-take typing class in summer school. If they could just see me type now!!

I just barely made it through myself. I remember we had new fangled typewriters that plugged in so that you didn't have to hit the keys hard to make an imprint on paper. I discovered the hard way that it would throw spit wads all the way to the chalkboard up front.

I remember the typewriters you describe. I think I must have been seven or so and was in a room full of them...I don't know why (I was in my little league baseball outfit at the time too
). But when I was told what they were I was taken with the idea of shorthand. I went ot the library and got a book on the subject and bought a stenographer's pad. The bloom fell off when I realized it was still more work than I wanted to do. lol

I was terrible in typing class in high school in the 70's. To be honest, I have never really ever "learned" to type. Now, it is no longer " hunt and peck", I would say it is now more like "backspace, cut and paste."

Typing class???
Well, I cannot keyboard today because of my bad behavoir in that class. I skipped at least twice a week and came drunk to the midterm.(I have said I was not good in my past life.) The teacher decided it was best that I drop the class which was a really good idea.
The downside of my terribly, juvenile behavior is I teach with this person.

I never could get the required "word count" with only 2 errors - C student the entire semester. Always 35 wpm and 3 to 8 errors. I'm convinced I could have done better if we had electric typewriters instead of those finger-muscle building manuals.
As an aside, I'm convinced that is why mature people really pound the dickens out of computer keyboards (my Dad seriously needs one made by Tonka) and younger people just lightly glide over it.

OMG - same here! I dropped typing - I constantly peeked under the paper! I think I might have made it to 30 something but today I am faster on a keyboard but still have to look. I hated those ribbons!

i was pretty much ok in typing but I never got that shorthand stuff, good thing I never had to use it. Remember that messy carbon paper?

Okay, I'm really showing my age here, but does anyone remember the mimeograph machines with the bright blue ink that they used to run copies of tests on at school?
Btw, I took typing in high school, and even with a college degree, it remains one of the most useful classes I've taken. Who knew we'd all be keyboarding in 2008?

I sure do....the smell! It is a wonder more children did not have brain loss from the fumes.

I do remember the smell! Maybe that's why we didn't have ADD back then; we were all sedated from the fumes.

We had electric typewriters but our teacher made us learn on manual, oh my fingers did ache after an hour of that. If you made a mistake or looked down at your keys she smacked your hands with a metal ruler.
Back in the good ole days of physical punishment makes one learn quicker.
But I got an A and I can really fly on the keyboard thanks to her.

I don't remember the gross ribbons, but I don't mind telling you that I was the queen of typing...Judging by the freakin' number of posts I've racked up in 10 months, I still am.
I think teachers would be happier today if we still had that smell. I actually walked into my department chair's office yesterday and asked her for a doobie. (I shoulda asked my students instead.) And I don't even smoke doobies.

I cheated my way through typing by memorizing and looking at my fingers...it hasn't slowed me down!

That's not cheating. That's practicing.

I never had a typing class. I went to a prep school that believed that there was no point in teaching us to type because we'd all be successful enough to have a secretary to do our typing for us.
Obviously they didn't foresee the advent of the personal computer.
In any case, I just hunt and peck. It's quick enough for me because I don't type prewritten documents. What I type are new documents that I am composing in my mind while typing, so my skills are adequate.

At my school, whenever the "gifted" kids did badly on tests, I had a teacher who would shake his head and say, "I guess somebody has to dig the ditches."It was called "Discovery" in my district. I ran into my Discovery teacher, a truly wonderful woman, when I was 20 or so. At a convenience store I was getting out of my pick up and covered in mortar. On seeing me, I felt at the time, I saw her die a little bit lol. Having some perspective over that 20 year old kid now I think it was transference.

I did well & am thankful for the electric typewriters & the fact that I actually remembered stuff from that class. It was Business Ed. for us & Apple computers were just coming out. My math tutor/7th grade teacher lived in my neighborhood had one, so I got to learn about computers early on, too. I guess that's why even though I don't claim to know much about computers, I can figure it all out.

No, but does anyone remember the teletype? My first job was when I was in college as a receptionist and we used one to communicate with our offices in Scotland & Africa.

No first duty in the a.m. when I came in was to check the telex machine and tear the paper off in sections....I guess this was pre-fax machines...'cept I could talk to them in "real" time. I remember I had to type out the message to the intended party that would punch out a tape...it looked like brail and then I would have to feed it into a whole.....dial the number.....and the tape would go through typing out the message on the other side of the world....I thought that technology was incredible....little did I know.
Beach Fanatic
The company I worked for just after college (mid 80's) still had a teletype to communicate with our overseas offices.
And I think "dittos" are mimeographs, if I remember correctly.
