Do you remember?

Do some of you..ah...more mature peeps remember shorthand and typing on typewriters with those gross ribbons. I was just sitting here sort of doodling while on the phone and it made me think of shorthand, which lead to typing class, etc. I do remember that I flunked typing class because I had a crush on a guy and we got sent to the office every day for talking and passing notes. It was soooo embarrasing to have to re-take typing class in summer school. If they could just see me type now!!

No first duty in the a.m. when I came in was to check the telex machine and tear the paper off in sections....I guess this was pre-fax machines...'cept I could talk to them in "real" time. I remember I had to type out the message to the intended party that would punch out a tape...it looked like braille and then I would have to feed it into a hole.....dial the number.....and the tape would go through typing out the message on the other side of the world....I thought that technology was incredible....little did I know.

...now you can type your message to the intended party in real time, too, and nobody thinks anything of the technology.

I can't wait for a teleporter, myself, because I want to be there right now.

I took typing and failed. I just learned by hunting and pecking at first and then just progressed from their. The funny thing is that a typing teacher would stroke out watching me type now. Home row my arse.

I can remember when a laser printer cost about $5k, looked like a buick, and printed about a page every other minute.

Oh, ya'll ...I can remember typing on a manual while the teacher had a metronome in class so we would all type at the "correct speed", I can also remember being a student at Auburn in 1966. My faculty adviser would not allow me to change my major to business. He said a woman could only get a job as a secretary or as a teacher. Not what I had planned on....Gees....

Along those lines, my younger sister used to say she wanted to be a gas station attendant (this was late '60's, early '70's) and I remember our mom saying not to be ridiculous. Girls don't pump gas, she said.

BTW, sis now holds an MBA in internal auditing! Times change.

I don't have good memories of typing class. I wore my "steady" :roll:boyfriend's high school ring on a chain around my neck. Somehow, I got the chain down in the keyboard and in my attempt to free myself I got it so wound up and caught up that the teacher had to call the maintenance guy to come in and practically disassemble the freakin' typewriter to get the chain out. When I went back to collect what was left of the chain, my teacher said I should probably look for a job that did not require typing, or had typewriters on the premises.

By the way, that asdfjkl; drill, only works if you start out on the correct keys.

Uh, yeah. There was this thing we had to type regarding ducks, and then hand in uncorrected. Right hand was in the correct place, left hand was one key to the right.

I can still see my teacher's face :floor:

Man, I loved that smell!!!

I can smell it right now. thanks for the memories ya'll!

We had electric typewriters but our teacher made us learn on manual, oh my fingers did ache after an hour of that. If you made a mistake or looked down at your keys she smacked your hands with a metal ruler.

Back in the good ole days of physical punishment makes one learn quicker. :floor:

But I got an A and I can really fly on the keyboard thanks to her.

I had a teacher that was so strict and mean and scary! No one, I mean no one, would dare look at their hands while typing. she never smacked us, but she definitely had that "look" - you know the one... I learned to type fast and loved it. still do! it was one of the most useful classes ever.

in fact, for years after that class I would go around and do this typing out every word of my thoughts or words being said to me by someone, or from tv, like barely moving my fingers so no one could tell what I was doing. very silly little obsession. still do it occasionally.

:D Oh the smell right off the ole press... sigh,.,.,.,.,.,.

Okay, I'm really showing my age here, but does anyone remember the mimeograph machines with the bright blue ink that they used to run copies of tests on at school? :D

Btw, I took typing in high school, and even with a college degree, it remains one of the most useful classes I've taken. Who knew we'd all be keyboarding in 2008? :idontno:

This is taking me WWWWAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY back.

I remeber when we had to do reports in college and discovered E-Z-RASE typing paper. You cold erase from the paper without any sign. It was oily and had to "Dry out" before you turned it in. Beat the hail out of normal paper. 'Cept some profs would not allow it. SOBs.

I think this is right. There were two types of copies when I was in school: Memeograph and hectograph. Memeograph was the clear liquid, purple type stuff that smelled so good. Hectograph was the balck ink stuff.

First real PC I bought as over $6k (Not to be confused with the trash 80, etc fore runners.) I still have the HP Lazer Jet II that cost about $4k. Prints grayt. Just send the document to print, go to bed and pick them up in the morning. Weighs a TON.
