Looks like our December SoWal trip is in jeopardy now. We were flying down with frequent flyer miles. Got online last night to book, there are no available free seats on our planned flight.

Frequent flyer miles are going to be even more annoyingly difficult to use now that Delta is cancelling flights to maximize the number of passengers per flight.
Even "back in the day" we called in December to get flights to Rome in late June. There wasn't one frequent flyer seat available to any city in Italy within several weeks of our preferred trip dates. We ended up having to fly to Munich and take a train to Florence, and then on the return trip take a train from Venice to Munich.

My husband and I were talking last night, and he said a friend had just commented the other day that frequent flyer miles have become nearly worthless. What's frustrating is that when we originally looked at the dates and flights, there was availability. Then, went back last night, the seats were gone. We spoke with an agent today, and the agent said it's the DFW/Ft. Walton leg of the trip that's unavailable; the St. Louis/DFW part of the flight is open. Grrrrrr...!

Have you tried the PCB airport? That's where I am flying out of...
Maybe they'll have something...SoWal Staff

Definately easier flying to PCB! You would have to fly into Atlanta. Since that's about the only flight out of PCB.
New Year's is worth it!! Trust me. I am still finding confetti in my shoes from two years ago.

It's even worse when you're actually paying for a trip. You find the flights you want, you wait until your husband comes home from work to see if it meshes with his schedule...and the price has doubled.
We've learned the hard way that when we see a fare we like, we grab it.percyAuthor

Then we decided, tried to book last night, no dice. Now it's a matter of if we want to pay for the tickets and come anyway, which really hurts considering it's a short trip, AND we were counting on free flights. We've learned the hard way that when we see a fare we like, we grab it.

Peapod, we live in st. louis and it's not a bad drive. We can make it door to door in 12 hours. If you think about it, you'd spend almost that much time flying anyway. By the time you drive to the airport -- get there 2 hours early, to have an hour delay...ect. Might be an option!

Can you fly into Pensacola and drive over?

Mobile??? This is too sad to have EARNED those miles yet cannot use them.
I am glad I never bothered with accruing them. Almost seems useless doesn't it?
We always fly Delta and we are flying into PCB for this trip. Last year when I was there we drove down, so I am looking forward to it being just the two of us and flying. Definately gives us more time in the area.
I hope you find something peapod!!!

Mobile??? This is too sad to have EARNED those miles yet cannot use them.Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! Yes, we can fly to Mobile--that's our closest option. So far, it's our only option if we use the miles as planned. Just a bummer, though, because the flight isn't direct, so it'll take about 6 hours to get there, then we'll have to drive from Mobile... And this was supposed to be a relaxed no-worries trip. I realize I'm whining...

And, YES, the miles do feel useless, I agree totally.

Delta is really hurting themselves and their passengers. Canceling flights, late takeoffs, poor customer service...I know of three families that will NEVER fly them again and this all happened in a span of four days. I am sad to see this happen...competiton helps us all.

We spent 9 hours time getting there flying from DFW/Memphis/Fort Walton Beach and renting a car. Could have driven in 13 hrs.

Grrrrrr...!We have an "in" at Delta (my brother) who can look at the seat availability for every flight and tell us whether it's in jeopardy of being cancelled or, at the other extreme, too full and risky for getting bumped (or for not getting our Mom on a flight since she flies free as a parent of a Delta employee). That helps us quite often.

The loss of that, combined with all the other airline changes everywhere, it's a hassle now.

My point Ed Zachery!!! My husband has me convinced, living in the midwest, we are 10 hours from almost every we want to be, so we might as well drive. Man, I hate when he is right!
BTW....GO CARDS!!!!!!!!

Yes, my midwest pals....a big change at STL airport in the past years. As much as we used to "love" AA, it has now become almost like "Big Brother". My husband, who is like a "Kryptonite" frequent flyer on AA, has found it very difficult for us to cash in all those miles. Therefore, we end up buying the tickets and accumulating MORE miles!!! It also amazes us when our relatives in Ft. Wayne, IN can fly to Miami way cheaper than we can on the same day! Repeal Wright, Right now!!! Southwest has my vote! No frills, but what an on time record!!!

Oh, I agree! I guess I'm a gambling woman in that I know it'll take a solid 12 hours to get to SoWal if we drive, whereas with flying, we can probably shave some hours off the trip. And we don't have to do the work. Those factors plus the "bonus" of the free miles. My point Ed Zachery!!! My husband has me convinced, living in the midwest, we are 10 hours from almost every we want to be, so we might as well drive.
